I am a student at a school in Ohio, but I am a Kentucky resident. I was wondering if bordering states give any preference as well or if it is only for residents. Seeing that I'm a Kentucky resident that would really help out my chances at about 7 more schools I was really interested in. Thanks for the help in advance.

I was also interested in if Marshall in WV typically showed any favor toward students in bordering state.

Somewhat. Don't expect the same benefits as a in-stater but you'll be at a somewhat better position then someone from a state across the nation. I know for my state ( MD) PA and VA schools take a lot of our medical students. But again if your stats are below par for the schools they won't give you enough favoring to actually help.

Cool. That is a big help. I probably didn't make the best decision going of state, but hopefully I can gain a little ground with the Ohio schools too seeing as there are like 6 there and KY only has 2 MD.

I'm from Kentucky also.

Indiana is NOT kind to OOS. University of TN isn't your best bet either. I don't don't know much about the other TN MD schools.

LMU-DCOM is private if I'm not mistaken. But based on people I've talked to as well as what I've read on SDN, it seems they favor people that plan to stick around the kind of cumberland gap/appalachia region.

Thanks for the info. Are you going to UK by chance. I REALLY would like to go there, but am not sure what they are really looking for other than the obvious good gpa mcat and that you want to be a primary healthcare doc. I live like 2 minutes away from UK but was slightly below their median gpa's ( I have a 3.7 cum and 3.6s). Any tips?

I'm going to Louisville.

I really think the bulk of what they're after is good GPA/MCAT. If you do well enough on the MCAT, your 3.7 will be just fine.

They said they wanted people who weren't just bookworms. That may go without saying, but if nothing else, let them know what you do for fun at the interview. They'll probably ask, but just to be sure.

Sweet. Thanks for the advise. I haven't taken any practice tests or anything yet (Starting those in about a month or so) but with a 3.7 what do you think would be a competitive MCAT for U of L. I know the MSAR has like a 30 or 31 median but I also know that that number is probably inflated from the out of state applicants.

I wouldn't agree with the assertion that UK wants you to go into primary care. Primary care is a minority at UK. UK has essentially become the state of kentucky's one-stop shop for subspecialty care from pediatrics to adults.

Thanks for the info! So as far as UK is concerned if I am lucky enough to get an interview next year and they ask what specialty I am interested in what are they fishing for. Right now I honestly don't know which specialty I am most interest in but really want to go to UK because its am amazing location for me and just a great school all around from what I have been told.

The interviewers will not care what you say when asked what specialty you're interested in. I think the best answer is, "I don't know because I haven't been exposed enough to all the specialties to make an informed decision." Physicians all know that almost no one will stick with their initial specialty choice, so it's somewhat humorous to hear college students be dogmatic in their specialty choice. Not until you're well into your 3rd year do I think people begin to make informed decisions....which highlights how little time you have to make the decision that will ultimately affect the rest of your life since you really have to know what you're going into by early spring of your 3rd year.
