Hi all! I am new here on SDN. I am a Texas Resident, who graduated with Bachelors in Biology from UCLA in the summer and moved back to Texas. I have a 3.56cGPA/3.52sGPA. My GPA includes 4 dual credit classes which I took in high school (English and Math courses inwhich I received B's). I was able to get A's in English and Calculus at UCLA. I have one W in OChem III (retook for a B-). I have 2 C+s on my transcript, onein OChem II and one in Physics I. I have 33Q MCAT (11P, 10V, 12B).

Other stuff, which probably doesn't matter much, butI guess is worth a mention: non-URM first generation college student, received Pellgrant throughout college (lower middle class), helped take care of my Aunt with Alzheimer's for a year (lived with my other Aunt, who wasn't ill)

ECs I will have by May:

AWARDS:
-Received Provost's Honors several quarters

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE:

-Hospice Volunteer since Sept 2011, will have ~150hours by May
1) Representative/Main Volunteer at one of the nursing homes our hospice sends patients to: visit with patients, make and passout popcorn to residents, call bingo, help out with holiday activities, paintpictures with the residents, (leadership) organized and leads informal choir activity for patients
2) Other Stuff: attended Alzheimer's walk, helpedout with memorial for patients that passed away, occasionally go to patients homes to help out with chores/groceries and visit

-ER Scribe since Oct 2011, will have ~300 hours by May

-Volunteered as a vision screener for a semester working with primarily socioeconomically disadvantaged patients, ~30 hours

SHADOWING:
~100 hours total shadowing several types of physicians (primary care, cardiologist, endocrinologist)
~50 hours shadowing a DO, will have a DO LOR

NON-CLINICAL EXPERIENCE:
-Dorm Activity coordinator freshman year

-Breast Cancer outreach volunteer for primarily disadvantaged Asian communities, ~25 hrs

-Volunteer at a Christian-run Homeless shelter/transitional living facility Since Oct 2011, ~70 hours by May
1) tutors English and helps residents with resumes
2) helps serve meals every other Tuesday

-Children Liturgy of the word Teacher/Leader since Sept 2011, 1hr/wk- will have ~20 hrs by May
Performs in puppet shows, guides children to mass, helps run learning activities- coloring etc.

RESEARCH:
I applied for a clinical research program at thelocal medical school that will last a semester. If I don't get accepted I won't have any research experience except significant research experience from highschool, which I will not be putting on my application.

WORK EXPERIENCE:
-1 summer as an administrative lab assistant, tookinventory, placed orders
-1 summer as a restaurant hostess
-ER scribe job

HOBBIES:
-Singing (was in choir for a quarter, leads informalchoir at nursing home, was in choir in high school)
-Cooking ethnic food

I'm planning on applying to all Texas medicals chools as a Texas resident, including TCOM and Baylor (really BIG reach). I am also going to apply to several lower/mid-tier OOS schools including LLU (not SDA, but Catholic), USC,Uniformed Services (dad was in the military, but I have no experience in the service), Tulane and others to be determined. I am going to apply to 3 DOschools including Western, CCOM, and AZCOM.

What are my chances? Do I have a shot?

Did any of your ECs that are medically relevant take place before January 2011, like maybe some shadowing or the vision screening?? What about nonmedical altruistic activities during college?

Unfortunately, I was confused on what career path to take for a long while in undergrad and felt very discouraged about pursuing medicine due to my low GPA. I volunteered as a vision screener during Junior year and part of the summer to explore optometry as an alternative to becoming a physician. I decided that wasn't for me and started shadowing doctors senior year and was involved in breast cancer outreach. After shadowing, I felt becoming a physician is what I'd really enjoy doing and have decided to pursue it regardless of my low GPA.

I know am in a bit of a pickle with my ECs ><.

To a large extent it will look like you suddenly dropped onto the planet about 8 months before you apply, but fortunately you got some patient experience out of the vision screening gig and can relate that to medicine.

I think chances are good that you can get an acceptance somewhere (though maybe not Baylor or UTSW) but if I were you, I'd be sure to continue engaging in relevant activities through your application cycle, letting schools know via update letter. If you ended up reapplying, you'd be in a much stronger position with the extra year of experiences to put on the reapplication.

I think your activities are generally a very good mix, just short-lived. Be sure to include your music and any other hobby involvement that shows you had some long term dedication to something.

When did you help with your aunt with Alzheimer's Disease?

My aunt with Alzheimer's moved in with my Aunt, Grandma, and I the summer of Junior year. When my well-aunt was away from home working, I was the primary care-giver senior year of undergrad. Honestly, I had to stay at home quite a bit to watch over her, keep her company, buy groceries, cook, and help her take her meds. She preferred that I keep her company over my aunt and would sometimes only take meds if I persuaded her to. I don't regret having to take care of her, but it left little time for ECs senior year. However, I know this situation does not make up for my lack of ECs for the previous years.

I will continue with my ER scribe job and volunterr stuff past the application cycle.

Sounds like a good idea to list it under the other category. I will probably be mentioning the experience as part of my PS since the experience did strengthen my desire to want to go into medicine. I was pretty much her primary source of happiness at the time and her dog.

As a Texas resident, I think you should have a pretty good shot at TCOM, and a fighting chance at UTHSCA, Tech-Lubbock, Paul Foster, and A&M. UTMB and UTH are also possibilities. A 33 might even get you an interview at UTSW, although your GPA will certainly hurt you in that regard.

The key for you will be to apply early - get your LORs in, get your PS written, have everything ready to go as soon as possible. Most Texas schools start interviewing extremely early (the first week of August), so the earlier you have your application in, the earlier you can be considered for an interview.
