I am getting ready to start MSII in a few weeks, so I thought I'd read the through the relevant physiology and pathology chapters to get a head start on classes. My physiology book (Costanzo Physiology) is well written and easy to follow, but I find that after about 45 mins to an hour I sort of tune out and can't absorb anymore. Any one else have these issues? Do you have any tips to break up the monotony or maintain focus when you're just reading a texbook from cover to cover?

Thanks!

I empathize like you wouldn't believe. Nothing very useful to suggest. Physiology puts me to sleep.

Break up your study time in 30 minute segments? Switch from Costanzo to another text/resource every 30 minutes? 😕

Plant the idea of reading it cover-to-cover in your mind.

Do people ever learn?

Read, do questions, read, do questions, read, refresh SDN, make a few snarky comments, read, watch some youtube, do some questions, etc.

Repeat as necessary. Should get you through the day nicely.

I'm SHOCKED that you are having a hard time reading a textbook cover to cover! I say you should look at the old slides to reinforce that material. Then watch the old lectures if they're still available.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions; I know it might seem silly to try to read a textbook in its entirety, but I really think I need to. I browsed through last year's slides for my school and they are very bare bones so I don't think they'll be that helpful for studying. Also, if it turns out that any of the classes are poorly taught I'll be screwed; when I did my cardiopulmonary block, physiology was my weak point as I barely had time to read the text in addition to class stuff. So anyway, I just need to get a leg up on this, both for classes and for boards. I'm going to try breaking up my study session into smaller blocks and also try to incorporate questions... any suggestions for a good source of physiology questions that's organized by systems?

@ BigRedder, 😀 I do refresh my SDN browser to procrastinate.

Pretty much this.

BRS phys is a great source for the shelf exams. Not sure about questions per se, but the review itself was comprehensive. I'd focus as much as possible on learning whatever they teach, then compare to BRS for some perspective.

i don't really blame you... Physiology on its own is a pretty dry subject for me but when you pair it with pathology it becomes interesting
