Hello friends,

I'm in my final year of residency...I plan on relocating to the Boston area. I'm willing to live and/or commute within an hour's distance of the Cambridge area.

Anyone know how tight the job market is there?

Any advice on how to look for a job there?

What major CMG's operate there? I'm open to do a firefighting gig if the pay/benefits are right, but I don't really know which CMG if any is dominant there... Anyone know?

Thanks.

Job market is reasonably tight, but certainly jobs are available.

There is not a dominate CMG (thankfully, eh?).

In the City proper, the gigs are largely academic (BWH, MGH, Tufts, BIDMC). Each of those has one ore more community affiliates in the surround ring or two of towns/burbs; some of those are hybrid jobs, some are pure community (my job). There is one for-profit group (Steward) that runs a few of the local hospitals (Quincy, Carney... etc) that is the closest to a CMG you'll get in these parts. There are a number of democratic groups that still hold contracts as various community hospitals nearby (say Beverly, Winchester...). In Cambridge itself, there is Mt. Auburn which is a harvard affiliate partially academic place (I know people happy working there), and Cambridge Health Alliance that runs 3 shops nearby (a nice hybrid community with some academics group... used to work for them, have good things to say about them...)

Anyway, there are recruiters mostly for the Steward hospitals or hospitals about 45min drive from the city that you can find with google. Otherwise, I'd suggest just looking online, finding places that look interesting to you, and trying to get in touch with the boss there....

Since jobs near Boston come up pretty often, I thought I'd drop this for anyone interested--

Our greater network has some open spots available in a couple community EDs and also UCs, located widely around the Boston area. Great group to work for (cough I'm biased cough).
