Is anyone familiar with the dual degree program at BU in Medical Sciences (MA) and MPH? I've heard that it can be completed in 2 years full-time. Anybody out there who's done the program or knows anything about it, I'd appreciate any info you have. Thanks

I completed the Master's portion and chose not to pursue the MPH degree so as to avoid plungling into further debt pre-med school. I was able to take a course in the school of public health and my roomates were both MPH students so I can vouch for the program. It is meant to be completed in two years, the benefit to which is that you can put off submitting your MA thesis until you complete the MPH courses. This way you can work on your thesis research for the year you are taking public health courses (you complete the MA coursework first, then take on MPH courses). If you have more specific questions fire away, I'd be glad to answer them.

Thanks for the response! I was wondering if you could tell me how competitive admission is for this program? Do they consider you along with the pool of applicants applying for the M.A in medical science or is there a separate pool of dual ma/mph applicants? Also, could you refer me to a helpful faculty or staff person there, whom I could contact for further questions I may have? But my major concern right now, is being admitted to the program...either the M.S. (like you have already completed) and or the dual mph program. Any info or advice you have in applying would be really really much appreciated Cammy, so thanks again in advance!! 😳)

1) You need only apply to the MA program first (aka GMS program as it's called around campus) and then you can worry about applying to the school of public health. I'm not sure how competitive getting into the GMS program is, certainly not as crazy as Georgetown's SMP program though.

2) If you decide you want to do the MPH you would submit an app to the school of public health during the admission cycle for 2006 (that would be the fall after you finish up GMS). I don't know all of the details on this so you could definately ask the GMS office, or contact the SPH directly.

3) Natasha Hall is the admin in charge of GMS stuff, she was the one I called incessantly to get my application expedited. I had to call and harrass the office many times to find out what was going on so I think if you try to establish a relationship with her it definately helps (although, word is she hates me now but that's beside the point 🙂)

Hope this helps!
