Hi everyone,

Does anyone know what are the "worst" programs in Neurosurgery. I am a woman, and I really want to pursue neurosurgery, but most of the programs look like they don't take women. I have 251 on my board score and some research with one paper, but I am not AOA. So I figured that if I only apply to the 30 bottom programs, I may actually have a chance of getting in. Thanks for help,

Christa.

The programs aren't discriminating against women; my guess is that few to no women are applying to the programs. About half the guys in my school, when asked, mention surgery as a possibility, but I have yet to hear a single female mention surgery as something they're considering (otolaryngology aside). Not to be sexist or anything; I'm just speaking based on experience and my encounters with people.

Don't get discouraged so easily; they'd probably love to have some women. Unfortunately I don't think there are any programs that take more than just a couple of people a year, so there may be no such thing as one that's actually easy to get into.

All of the programs would love to take women. There are not a lot of female residents because few women apply. Your application looks great. If you are interested in neurosurgery then apply.

The University of Miami has 2 female residents and they are by no means in the bottom 30.

I was only thinking that a program that is less competitive, would be more likely to accept a woman with higher stats, instead of a man with lower stats. I know that at many places if they have choice between a man and a woman with the same stats, they will always take the man, and some of the chairmen also believe that the place of women is definetly not in neurosurgery.

If there are any women out there that have applied in the last year or so, and have a list of programs that are more likely to accept women and would be willing to share the list I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks.

That's a load of crap; stop victimizing yourself. They want women more, so they'll look progressive and liberal and the feminists will pay them.

I think you need to grow up, if you want to do neurosurgery at the end of the day you need to get the job done. I am suprised you would ask such a niave question with such high board scores. The excpetion of UVA (which even now has changed) there are a couple of individuals who are anti-women but very few.

I believe, compared with men, its actually easier for women to get into Neurosurgery. I agree with some posters that most residency programs are looking for a good mix and certainly most top programs have female resdients. Just look at Brigham, Washington, Barrow, Virginia to name a few.

One has to realize that competition is immense and men usually have the right persona, thick skin, on-your-face confidence, alongwith solid academic background, to withstand neurosurgical training.

Obviously, now with the 80-hr thing, more women would be interested...🙄
