I unfortunately couldn't make it to the rank of Eagle Scout (the highest rank in Boy Scouts) due to high school academics and whatever. However I was a patrol leader for about a year and held various other positions for awhile. I was also able to attain the rank of Life Scout, whici is the rank b4 eagle.

Should I put this in my application? It was in my high school years, keep that in mind.

Or is it worthless in adcoms' eyes?

Everybody's a patrol leader at some point in scouts...maybe if you were SPL or junior asst scoutmaster it might mean something to an adcom member familiar with scouting. OA might be another thing they might notice. But I doubt that joe blow adcom member who wasn't a boy scout would be impressed unless you got your eagle.

unless you got Eagle, I wouldn't put it (and many on here will tell you in upcoming posts not to even put it then)

...I put my Eagle down when I applied. No idea if it helped or hurt.

Yeah I figured. I did get OA... I guess I could see putting that in. True that about everyone being a patrol leader though haha.

On the same note, what about community service (soup kitchens through a church youth group and crap) during my high school years... namely does anything in that period of time for traditional applicants matter?

I really, really wished I finished up my eagle scout.

sigh

Honestly... even if you were an Eagle scout, I wouldn't put it down. You want to stick to things you did during undergrad... you shouldn't be filling out with HS activities unless you continued them into undergrad.

If this was a major formative event, mention it in your PS or work it into your interviews, but don't list it as an EC.

Sounds good. That is what I was assuming.

isn't there an "awards" secton separate from ECs on AMCAS or am I mixing that up with certain secondaries.

you can use an EC slot and select awards/honors from the drop-down menu

If it didn't happen during college and it wasn't a continuing activity, I would skip it. If you continue to be very involved with the boyscouts during college then I think it's worth putting down.

Nobody cares that you were a Boy Scout that couldn't hack it enough to finish and get Eagle. The whole point of even ever putting Eagle Scout on something is to show commitment to a goal. Putting anything else down on an app only shows that you quit early and are trying to fill space on a stats paper.

I think it'd be necessary to put Eagle Scout. I was in the Boy Scouts (We Be Loyal Scouts) and if I were an Eagle Scout I would more than likely put it. It is not something that should be taken lightly. Lots of leadership, respect, honor, etc.

sorry sir

OA involvement can last until age 21 IIRC, and I knew a few people in college who did that... but the other thing to remember is that scouting seemed to come up a lot in my interviews, especially the ones with other students, and it does make for great interview discussion (anything to distract from the "if you were a plant, what type of plant would you be?" type questions is a good thing).

Absolutely 100% True...whenever I fill out a resume I always note on there that I earned Eagle Scout and the subsequent Eagle palms earned and my AMCAS was no different...seriously, why would someone not put down one of the highest honors that a young man can earn...It has come up in pretty much every interview I have ever had and I expect mentioning how scouting had such a pivotal role in my upbringing to come up in a med school interview...if I ever get one that is🙄

I have it listed as an award and none of my interviewers has even mentioned it. And I've had 16 interviewers so far.

If you're an ASM now or something, I'd put it down. Otherwise, save it for interview fodder. 🙂

I'm an Eagle Scout. It's not something that I listed, as it was a high school activity. I agree with the poster who nudged toward something like "listing boy scouting, unless you're currently an ASM, will just look like you're trying to fill space."

I listed that I was an eagle scout and several of my interviewers asked me about it. In fact, at one school we spent several minutes talking about what a great program BSA is. My interviewer's son happened to be finishing up his own Eagle project, so we had a lot to talk about. My point in posting is to say that I dont think it can hurt you to put on your ap. A previous poster mentioned that he had it on his ap and got 16+ interviews. I was in the same boat with over 20. The Eagle has only been earned by 5% of all boy scouts in the last century, so it really distinguishes those who have earned it. At the very least, it cant hurt to put it on and it may even help.

I put down my Gold Award (Girl Scout award equivalent to Eagle), but didn't get asked about it. Of course, that could be because alot of people don't realize what a Gold Award is and I couldn't exactly say "Did you notice that I earned the highest award in Girl Scouts? Any questions about it?"

HaHa. I quit cub scouts because we would have den meetings at a friends house and the mother insisted that the older brother walk me and my brother home. He didn't want to, so he beat us up and picked on us as long as I lived in that neighborhood. I think me and my brother were like 9 or 10 and he was 15 or 16.

Have to agree here. My brother has always put it down on resumes for jobs and actually in one interview, thats all they talked about (he ended up with the job). Like a lot of people put on here, it is a great conversational piece. I think that many of the people on here that say not to put it on the app either were not involved in scouts or did not complete their eagle. I was lucky enough to work a philmont as a ranger years after my eagle, so I just tied the two together on my AMCAS.

But, in your case, I would leave it out if you did not get eagle, like others have said, it actually shows that you didn't have a commitment to scouting and that you didn't finish what you started.

Hope this helps.

Now, if you'd gone on to do Venture Scouting while you were in college, that would be cool, because it would have been during your college years. The groups are co-ed, with an age limit of 21, after which our members become assistant Scout Masters. So, they just stick with the group and participate whenever they're in town. Too bad that there aren't more Venture Crews around. They can rock.

I put down scouting (I'm an Eagle though)

I probably wouldn't list it. I was also a Boy Scout, became patrol leader but never was an Eagle Scout.

I got my Eagle Scout during my Senior year of high school. It has come up in both of my medical school interviews and in Co-op interviews during undergrad. I know that it has helped me get jobs and pulled for me in medical school interviews since my interviewers even told me how impressed they were with the accomplishment. If you had gotten your Eagle I would say you should always include it, but since you came up short it may actually hurt you. You don't want to portray yourself as not being able to follow through. It's just like if you failed to complete medical school, but completed 3 years; you probably wouldn't brag about it.

i found a way to toss in OA, eagle scout, and other scouting things all into one. This allowed me to get away with mentioning the big things i did in high school, ie summer camp working, lifeguarding, etc without explicitly mentioning it. some people on SDN (even adcom members) say not to put it down..but id disagree. it was a major source of conversation for many of my interviews...

here is what i put on my amcas:

On December **, 2000 I became an Eagle Scout. I remained active with my unit, Troop **, for several years after earning the rank of Eagle.

As a Boy Scout, I was a staff member at several summer camps around the country, a lifeguard, a member of Order of the Arrow, and participated in many “high adventure” programs. Amongst the 43 merit badges I earned, my favorite was Wilderness Survival.

As an adult leader, I have served as the First Aid Merit Badge Counselor at my council’s local “Winter Camp” for the past several years.

It was called Camp Lone Oak I believe. From the quick google search i just did, I think its near Wildwood, FL? Near Coral Springs maybe???? This was my first summer camp....(so about 10yrs ago!)...my memory is fading a bit!
