Prob not the right place for this but I'm a surgeon and I want the opnion of surgeons. So I matched into a good fellowship program and I'm happy about it but after the match I got an offer from a program in the same specialty that fits my life better with regards to how close I can be to my daughter. The question I have for u guys and gals is what can happen if I break my match contract? Will it affect the new program that I will potentially go into? Thanks.

Depends on the rules of the specific fellowship match you used.

If its NRMP run, you are not able to take the other position (and I believe the preferred program would be in trouble for offering you a position post-match), unless the NRMP agrees to let you out of the contract. For the reasons you have given, this is extremely unlikely.

However, if your match (Trauma right?) is not NRMP run, best to check with whatever organization ran the match to see what their rules are.

Also depends if it's a Trauma-only fellowship (a true "fellowship," not a residency) or a Trauma/Critical Care fellowship (which includes a year of Critical Care "residency," since it's through the ACGME).

1 year critcare fellowship with trauma on the side. I figured as much. thanks guys
