Bring parents to KCOM interview???

I was just wondering if anyone that has already interviewed there brought there parents, or seen parents there. I know they encourage family and spouses. I just don't want to be a nerd. I don't want to be the only one with my parents there. Do you think ADCOM will view this as a sign of immaturity? I don't have a spouse to bring.

I think bringing your parents to a medical school interview is definitely bad. It shows you are dependent and it will look bad. You will be the only interviewee with parents. They do not need to be there and I think it is a grave error.

I don't see why they can't just stay with you at the hotel and drop you off for your interview. That way you will still have support but you won't look like a child to the ADCOM.

Bringing your folks with you on an interview, as Slickness said, seems like a sign of immaturity to me. While you and your parents may have good intentions, it looks as if a) your parents are overbearing b) you are too scared to go alone or c) did not realize this was an incredibly inappropriate thing to do in the first place. Would you bring your parents with you on a job interview?? No way.

If you folks want to see the campus, bring them to an open house or arrange something at a different time. The interview is supposed to be focued on YOU and not on your parents. Bring them along at another time.

My parents and fiance may go with me on a few of the actual trips, but not to the interviews themselves. For several reasons:

(A) They have always wanted to see new places, and this is a good excuse.

(B) I have to drive to most interviews because of money, and driving the whole way myself would suck.

(C) I save money.

This definitely isn't a problem. Personally, I don't even think it's a great idea for a spouse to come to the actual interview, although anybody coming with you on the trip is fine.

You guys are right, but you are aware that KCOM enocurages this and hold informational sessions for them throughout the day.

Going by yourself shows independence. Bringing along Mom and Dad won't help your situation at all.

This is a dumb question. But, would it be okay to bring your dog with you? I'm the only one who takes care of her. She is actually well-trained and doesn't bother people. So would this be wise?

Yeah. maybe kcom just wants to test who's immature enough to bring their parents.

Personally, I think this is not an issue at KCOM. They want the school to be family-friendly, and they encourage people to bring their spouses or parents. They have special sessions for them and want to make them part of the process.

The day of my interview at KCOM there was a guy that brought his parents, and a girl that brought her boyfriend. Didn't seem like a big deal. I thought it was kind of strange, and personally I would be somewhat embarrased if I was that guy, but the KCOM administration was actually glad they were there.

I know its like beating a dead horse to say don't bring your parents/girlfriend/boyfriend/long lost cousin/dog/cat/juan valdez's mule to your interview but I just wanted to add my take on this.

I went to an interview at UHS the first week of OCT and one of the girls there had her dad with her. I just noticed that both her and her dad seemed to feel a little off about being in the meeting room at the beginning of the day. I know most others at the interview came along with other people but they were dropped off and only came to pick them up afterwards.

I think the look on that girls face kinda said it all to me. This is a time for you the interviewee not time for bringing anyone along. Even if the school had a special meeting/presentation for them I would just feel odd having them there. I think my mind set was once I was at the interview other than everyone being in the same boat as me I wanted no distractions. I wanted to see what the school had to offer and give it my full concentration.

youngfaithful- just do what you feel like...I know when I interviewed at KCOM, there was a younger girl there w/ her dad. I didn't think anything of it, since KCOM wants to invite the spouse/parent to the interview so they might be able to help the applicant with their decision. Mind you, the guest is a part of the process EXCEPT for the actual interview. I don't think it matters...In fact, I would have brought my wife to KCOM if it was possible...Who knows, maybe another opinion may be helpful in choosing a med school...hmm😱 imagine that!

There were several people who brought their parents and SO's to the interview day at Kirksville. One of my interveiwers even asked if I had anybody with me because he would have had them come into the interview.

Really, it's all right to bring your parents to KCOM.

I'll be interviewing at KCOM on Feb 6th and I'll be taking my fiance along. All I have been hearing about KCOM is that they are very into the "community" atmosphere and thus should not frown upon having a spouse/so/fiance present. I was also swayed by the fact that they have a separate presentation while I am off in my interview.

If I were applying to another school, I might be hesitant to have my fiance present, however KCOM seems to encourage the interviewee to bring their SO, therefore, I will take advantage of it.

How bout this take:

If I am accepted to a school before this interview, I will bring my parents for this reason; they have never seen a med school, I am first generation college graduate, I know they would enjoy it, it could be a once in a lifetime opportunity for them. How's that. In light of all this, looking immature to the ADCOM seems silly. Especially if I am already accepted at MSUCOM.

If they don't like it...too bad. (unless I don't have an acceptance by that time, then scratch this thought).

Follow your heart! If you feel like sharing your wonderful experience with your parents, then do so. KCOM is an historic institution. The original school of osteopathy is there...the actual building is in the museum. Dr. AT Still's birth home is also in the museum, along with many, many artifacts and documents from the beginning of the profession.

I don't know where you are from, but Kirksville is a little slice of Americana, with a town square surrounding an old-fashioned courthouse. There are still a few brick streets and Pancake City (diner) is a feast for people watching. I'm sure your parents will have a good time sharing this with you!
