Brown Interview > Acceptance?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm another M1 at Brown with no previous ties to the university. I applied through AMCAS and interviewed in mid-Jan, which didn't seem late at all in the Brown cycle.

It's hard to say what exactly the admissions office looks for in an application. My sense is that they definitely prefer humanistic, activist, and/or creative activities. They seem to like unusual paths and interests. Also, they talked a lot about geographical diversity during my interview last year -- they especially like midwesterners and southerners because so many of the PLME students (combined B.A./M.D.) are from the northeast and CA.

I'm new to Providence this year, but so far it seems like a really vibrant little city. I've lived in both Boston and the Bay Area in California, and the housing is cheaper and nicer than both of those areas. I was hoping people would be more into the outdoors, but it seems that most people head to Boston or NYC for longer weekend trips. So the people tend to have an urban focus. I don't do much of the club scene, so I cant' really comment on that.

Someone mentioned the attentiveness of the faculty -- and it's TRUE!! They are so excited about the potential for this school. The energy for growth and innovation here is amazing. They really want to hear our experiences and thoughts about the curriculum -- to the point that it gets a little annoying giving so much feedback and reflection. But the faculty are really invested in teaching well (I have been really impressed with the quality of lectures) and in improving the curriculum for the next classes. They're still working it all out -- everything's not perfect, but it's still very good.

I don't check SDN much anymore (just procrastinating from studying for our exam right now!), but if anyone has any other questions, feel free to PM me.

I have been invited to interview, and I don't feel I'm a particularly stellar applicant. 3.6, 31, average EC's.

I do, however, have ties to the area, and wrote about it in my essay.

As a lucky recipient of a Brown invite, I think they really look for maturity/life experiences/incredible EC in their standard admit AMCAS people. Because half of their class is from BA/MD program, lacking a whole lot of life experiences, I think they try hard to fill the other half of their class with very diverse, interesting people who may not necessarily have WashU stats (3.9, 37)

Cool beans!

That makes sense, cause I would actually consider myself diverse with many unique life experiences.

It's my only interview invite thus far, so I've got a lot riding on it :scared:

when are you interviewing? i think these are the reasons that i was invited as well...coincidentally they are the reasons that i chose to apply to brown, and it became a top choice for me. i love the diversity and crazy life experiences i hear about in the student body and can't wait to interview there.

Good luck to you both!🙂:luck::luck::luck:🙂

Hope we'll get to hang out next August in Providence 😀

I'll see you later this month, aaj117!

Oh boo, I'm only interviewing in January!
Oh well, I will try to be patient, and let's hope we're all there in August!

I am THRILLED to be able to say that I am now officially allowed to post on this thread. My status page changed sometime between 10 this morning and 1:30pm. (Yes, I check the page that often and yes, I thought it was stupid to do so until today!) I GET TO INTERVIEW!!! It's a dream come true. Seriously, this is so awesome. 😀

Don't know when my interview date will be yet because I'm at work and can't check my email from here...they don't block this forum though!!

I feel like I fulfill a lot of those non-traditional qualities and would love to interview at Brown. When were you all complete? My completion letter was dated 10/2. Do you think I was too late, have already gotten a pass, or that they may near the end of their interview invites? Should I send an LOI? Sorry for throwing so many questions at you all, but I really am interested in Brown.

I was complete in September (I believe the 17th or something). But I did send a letter of interest to Brown last Thursday and it seems to have worked! They may already have decided to interview me (seems doubtful that a letter would change their minds in two days), but it clearly did not hurt. I am also a non-trad and have a very strong commitment to service and I feel that Brown's priorities are right up my alley. Plus, I like their curriculum and their opportunities for electives. My letter just outlined everything I love about their school and how it fits right in with my personal background.

Good luck! I doubt you applied too late. :luck::luck:

your 3.9 gpa and 35 MCAT probably didn't hurt. haqhahaha. good luck.

I'll see you later this month, aaj117!
ooo are we interviewing the same day? Nov 15th? Exciting!

HereICome congratulations!! i know how much you were dying for this one. I didn't get the email for about a week after the status page change, so be patient but start celebrating today!!

Oh and to the person who asked about complete dates, mine was in the end of august and i heard about the interview about a month ago, check my mdapps for a more accurate timeline.

I'm not sure if you are guys are in luck or just out of luck with having a Nov 15th date. Admissions told me they send out their first round of decisions on Nov 16th. This may mean you get just in, but possibly the admissions committee meets the day before that. So you may have to wait a month or two to hear back. But don't worry. They have an almost 50% acceptance rate from interviews.
And I hope to see you guys there in August also

well, that's exciting news for me, i thought they didn't send out their first acceptances until january 16th. It'll be nice if i don't have to wait more than 2 months, but i also wouldn't mind hearing then if i do get in cuz it'd be a fantastic birthday present (jan 17th).

Wow! You finally got it! 👍 You go girl!

Thanks Doublecortin and aaj! I'm super excited!! Maybe we'll all be exploring Providence together in August! And Doublecortin, maybe I can show you why I love Cape Cod so much!! I'm sooooo happy that I got this interview. It's going to be so much fun to go out and visit!

Congrats hereIcome! I am actually going to Providence this weekend to see my bf. After this last weekend I just had a Brown invite would sure be nice. My hope is dwindling, but has not been completely lost.

Thanks guys! Pandulce, did you send a letter of interest? I highly recommend it! Who knows if it was the reason I got the invite, but it obviously didn't hurt.

Since the beginning of this whole process (about 3 years ago), I've loved Brown and Cornell. In the past couple of months, I've fallen quite hard for UVM and Vanderbilt. And then there's always the fascination that comes along with Columbia and Stanford. And there are other things I love about all the schools I've been fortunate enough to secure an interview at. I don't understand when this whole thing gets easier. I imagine it will be the hardest thing EVER to choose a school if I get in to more than one of these amazing programs. But it's certainly an exciting process, that's for sure!

I'm really hoping still for UVM, Stanford and BU invites. Don't want to be greedy but I can see myself at all of these schools!! BUT I AM MOST DEFINITELY HAPPIER THAN I CAN EXPLAIN ABOUT BROWN!!!!!

Pandulce, don't give up hope. I heard that Brown only has 17 interview days, so they are kinda stingy about giving out a ton of invites early on. You can still interview in February or March and get in. Don't give up!!!

Congrats hereIcome!! 🙂

I'm not gonna lie. I have no idea why Brown would invite me. I don't have an amazing MCAT score or awesome ECs. I guess if Brown believes in me, I gotta believe in me, right?

For those of you who indicate a "complete" status or even an invite...how did Brown contact you? I submitted my secondary two weeks ago, with LORs sent the next day via fedex overnight. I got an email from Brown saying to wait for a letter in the mail with password etc. How long did ya'll have to wait for the letter and does Brown tell you you are complete with LORs on the website?

thanks.

I'm wondering the same thing...

I think 2-3 weeks.

They indicate on your status page when they've received your stuff.

Btw, for any Brown people on here, how's Brown's gym, I've heard it's not so great??😕

Doublecortin, I've actually heard they have crappy gyms too. But I've never seen them myself. Can't be worse than the school I attended last year for my post-bac credits... I really don't need much more than a treadmill and some weights though.

I hope that some of that $100,000,000.00 that Brown Med received would go towards a state-of-the-art student rec center with the gym, swimming pools, jacuzzi, sauna, free massages, bar, billiards, and pole dancing facilities. If you are reading this Dean Adashi, pleeeeze :hardy:

I spent the whole summer working out at the Brown gym and it leaves something to be desired. However, I did go to a huge public university in Florida, where people wore gym outfits that coordinated with their socks and their gym bag, so I am used to high class facilities. The gym at Brown is very old, and the free weight room is tiny... but it does serve its purpose.

There are a few local gyms in the area, but I would be too cheap to join one, hehe.

As I've mentioned before on this thread I am a fan of Brown. I am interviewing at Cornell (a fan of that school as well!) in December and am wondering if you all think that I should write Brown about being in the "neighborhood" (since I'm flying from the west coast). I was thinking of doing a combo update/LOI/i'm around on this date kind of email. What do you guys think?

I'm also nervous because I really only have one thing to update them about which is related to a promotion to a leadership role in my research ec.

I'm starting to get worried that I'm not going to make the list because I was complete on 10/2 and haven't heard anything.

Brown is really the only other school left that I'm super eager to visit.

Go for it. The worst that happens is they can't accomodate you because they haven't gotten to your complete date yet. The best that happens is an interview. extra leadership is great and if you like the school that much, it can't hurt to let them know. when are you going to cornell? maybe i'll see you there at one school or the other.

Thanks for the advice, aaj. This has got to be one of the friendliest threads in pre-allo! I guess Brown attracts good people.

Let's keep sharing the love, people!!!😀 :biglove:

On a side note, anyone know if food on Brown campus any good?😎

LEdaddy, I sent a letter of interest and got an interview invite two days later!

I do love this thread. It's probably one of the most cooperative, encouraging ones out there. I hope we all end up at school together!!!

Won't know till next week, but my little cousin goes to providence college so i'm going to make her show me the sites and best restaurants/hangouts. Are you staying for the weekend? if so we should get together.
And i agree everyone, i love this thread. It is nice to be able to talk about such a great school without people telling me that i'm only interviewing because i have checked black on my application, or that i dont deserve it as much as other people. it's rare to find such nice people in the pre-allo forum.

I want to know- who are these people who tell you that you don't deserve this?? Your application is fantastic. You have much more experience than anyone else on this site and from what I can tell, you're also just generally really cool. What med school wouldn't want someone who can handle herself under pressure and who goes out of her way to be kind to people even on an anonymous message board???

How strange that people think that way...

haha well thank you for the compliments...i don't know why! People always post asking for success stories of people with low GPAs...so i respond, hoping that my experience will encourage them, and then twenty people respond telling me that my experience "doesn't count" because i'm a URM and we are held to a completely different set of standards and blah blah blah. They all seem to think that i haven't noticed my gpa is low, and that they shoudl point it out to me. I had officially given up encouraging people, and now when i do i only do it through personal messages. I guess people are just so insecure on here they have to think "she has a lower gpa than i do so i deserve this more", because we all have different attributes.
OOoo and then there are the people who tell me and other posters that it's a bad idea to be "out" in the application process. Luckily there is a happy LGBT thread right now, but i have seen ones that turn into flame wars before and people telling me and others that it makes us weaker candidates. I won't name specific users, but there are a few who stick out in my head specifically who have been really rude about the URM thing and the LGBT thing.
This is why i want to go to brown. All the applicants just seem like the general feeling i get from the school...layed back and cool.

Plus, according to a friend of mine, Providence is one of the most LGBT-friendly cities (if not the friendliest) in the country.

Just know I'm rooting for you! It's too bad we won't be interviewing at Cornell or Brown together since we both love those schools so much! I think you're before me at both, so you'll have to tell me what it's like!

Not to sound like an annoying parent (though I do have kids), but there is often a lack of maturity and an abundance of insecurity among those who frequent this community. Don't let them get you down aaj! Reading your profile, I would much rather have you amongst my classmates than any of those who attacked you. It seems like a lot of the schools you applied to agree.

One more question for you guys:

Should I send my LOI email to the regular [email protected] or is there another email address that is more direct?

Thanks.

Aw thanks you guys the support is definitely appreciated and reciprocated, I am rooting for you as well. And luckily, Brown has a high interview to accept rate, so once LEdaddy gets his interview invite, we'll all have a good chance of being there. I hope the environment there is half as supportive as this thread!

I would wait until hereicome answers your question to send the letter, because I don't have direct experience here, but the emails that I've recieved from them have been from [email protected], so you might want to cc that address. good luck!

I am going to PM you, LEdaddy. I've got some pointers.

see you next thursday!🙂 I am actually flying out ~9pm to phili to meet a friend after the interview but we could hang out after the interview for a few hours. I am coming to providence on wednesday in the morning, and my student host doesn't get out until 5pm, so I'll be roaming the streets and trying to hit on Brown girls 😛 until then. So watch out Providence for a crazy Californian😀

Haha that's funny that you won't be around to hang out cuz you'll be in philly, because i live in philly but won't be there so that i can hang out in providence lol. I have to work a full day Wednesday, then wait till after rush hour and drive five hours to providence, so i probably won't get there until around 11:30pm wednesday, but after the interview thursday sounds great. I'll be the girl who looks hispanic but really isn't, more than likely in a green pants-suit who might also be hitting on Brown girls? haha jk i think i can control myself for a day. I'll be staying on Providence's campus, which is supposedly pretty religious, i might be going a little crazy.

Well, Providence definitely ain't no San Francisco Bay, but it's alright.

For those of you wondering about the gym, I'm embarrassed to say I haven't made it inside one yet this year...but I have been frustrated with the lack of a pool (the pool roof was determined to be structurally unsound this year, and isn't expected to be replaced until 2010 or so.)

Congrats to all of you with interviews and good luck!

Hey aaj117, UPenn's not showing you any love?!? How strange, and you work there?

Browns gym does suck...they have satellite facilities which are good for cardio stuff, the equipment is there on campus...treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, track, ect.

They are making a brand new gym which is going to be completed (tentatively) in 2010.

There is basic free weights and cyberX type machines...

All in all it gets the job done. There is a good local gym about 1 mi from the campus if it is important to you and also a YMCA (5 minutes) from Brown.

Hey aaj117, UPenn's not showing you any love?!? How strange, and you work there?
Nope, no love from Penn. But i'm over Penn. I don't actually work there, i work for a private practice that is affiliated, but i DO take post-bacc courses there. Although, last year, the director of admissions pretty much told me not to apply because they had plenty of "qualified applicants from princeton" when she heard my gpa. The more time i spend there though, the less i like it. I'm not overly impressed wtih the attitudes of the students that i've met. i'd be much happier at a lot of other places i've interviewed and/or been accepted. I don't really think i'd fit at Penn anymore, although i used to love it.
