I went to the New England Health Career Fair at Yale and a representative from Brown was there. I asked her about Brown's new admission process for applicants outside the MD/Ph.D and PLME/Dartmouth/Brown Undergrad. route. She said they are expecting 8-10 matriculants from the regular route. And they've received 700 applications so far. Very glad I only sent in my AMCAS and not the check for the secondary.

That's weird... can you explain more about brown's system?

I don't know about that..I think she is uninformed...I recieved a packet from Brown today and it said "We are delighted to include students who are applying to medical school in a more traditional manner. We anticipate that nearly 50% of the Sept 2005 class will be drawn from routes other than PLME." So that means a good number of regular decision applicants will be accepted. 🙂

Right, but those other routes include: the RI school preference path (providence college, RI college, URI, and one other school); the Brown Avenue, which is for Brown grads; the Dartmouth-Brown deal; and then the established post-bacc linkages with Columbia, Goucher and Bryn Mawr.

The number of seats is definetely not 50% to outsiders. But the ratio is telling. Brown is trying to break into the top quartile of med schools and one way to increase standing (a la US News) is to increase applicants per acceptance. 8 spots with 700 applicants that previously were not there does help them acheive their goals.

That's the number I heard too, but I'm not sure how many of those accepted outside the PLME program will be MD/PhD and how many will be normal MD.

When I was applying to med school two years ago (from Brown), the pre-med advisor told me not to bother even applying to Brown Med through the Brown Avenue program because there were so few spots available "just a couple". Even though they are now opening themselves up to the general public, they still have to accomodate students from RI,Post-Bacc,MD/PhD and Brown-Dartmouth so the numbers of available seats must be tiny. Save your money cuz if your good enough to get into Brown Med as a general applicant you'll probably get in somewhere you want to go more.

That's interesting because one would think the med schools at the fair would be trying to "sell" their school to get as many people interested to apply. Instead, it sounds like this rep was detering people from applying by telling people that there are so few slots for outsiders. Good info to know though, as I was seriously considering applying to Brown next year. I'm going to have to think about it more carefully now.

As someone very much in the know about Brown and its traditional route of admission, let me shed some light on prior comments.

Yes Brown will have only 8-10 slots available for outside applicants (seperate slots have been alotted for MD/PHD; EIP and post-BACC, Brown avenue is being phased out). Don't let this deter you from applying - they will interview quite a few applicants (about 300) and don't know how many will they will accept yet (depends on matriculation).

By the way, Brown Med is an excellent medical school with good pre-clinical and clinical years. Rhode Island Hospital, Miriam Hospital and Memorial are where students do clinical rotation and all have cutting edge facilities with incredible doctors. And the match list from the last two years would rival almost any schools.
