I'm not yet into my clinical years, but as I noted on another thread, I'm currently working with another medical student classmate of mine who, among other things, often goes over the top with the brown nosing. It's tough sometimes to tell whether the attendings/residents we work with realize it consciously (and if they do, whether they mind), but watching this student do this is almost painful for me. I find it difficult to imagine myself acting that transparent . . . it would be uncomfortable.

I know there's a continuum to this, where you want to be helpful and energetic and interested, without going overboard (and the line you cross from the former to the latter is not always clear), but I feel like in general, although I'm a nice and pretty outgoing person, that I may indeed need to ramp things up a notch.

What have your experiences been in regard to this?

Unless you think your resident is stupid, then don't fool yourself and think they can't tell what you're doing.

Sadly, the trick to doing really well third year is to strike the right balance between being energetic/enthusiastic/helpful/intelligent and not being a doucebag

And that balance is different on every rotation.
