Has anyone used the BRS pharm flash cards to study, or know anything about them? I am a little weak in pharm and wanted to get a source for pharm in addition to FA/QBank in order to improve in it. I have less than a month until I take the exam, so I am hesitant to get another book at this point. I was considering getting BRS pharm, but the book is so old -- published in 1998, I believe -- that I don't know if it is worth using. The flashcards are much more recent --any insight? Thanks!

Let me start by saying "nice avatar."

Let me end by saying that I have the BRS pharm cards (as well as micro) and I like them. I started a thread awhile back though asking for people's opinions on flashcards, and the consensus seemed to be that the Lange ones were more popular. So you may want to go with those. Also, if you can get your hands on the Kaplan book, it's excellent.

Later Buster.

I have them, and while they're not 100% complete or up-to-date (e.g. I think my set doesn't mention that rofecoxib and valdecoxib were taken off the market), they correspond well with FA and serve as an excellent tool for memorizing the drugs. I don't like a lot of clutter on my cards...these narrow it down to the basics. Ideally, I think the best way to use them is to get the name recognition and major associations down, and then review FA to get the details. If you get them, note that there's one error I've seen so far: they call mifepristone the "morning-after pill," which is completely different; mifepristone is the "abortion pill."

I know you don't want another book, but at least check out Katzung & Trevor's "USMLE Road Map: Pharmacology." I know someone who has it and I've paged through it...it's far more concise than anything I've seen out there, and it's by good old Katzung. Since you have a month, it's worth checking out. Boards and Wards is also supposed to be short and sweet.

For pharm I would stick to FA. If you really need flash cards, I think the BRS ones were decent, but PharmCards, also from lippincott, are way toooo much. Also there is facts in a flash, sort of like flash cards, but keeps what you don't know and you can do those only, on gotmedbooks.com for free - has all the pharm in there, so take a look at that too.

good luck,

I had commented on the Lange cards before on nicedream's thread. I really like the Lange format. I first got the micro ones and liked them so much that I got the others. What I noticed in the Lange pharm cards is that they are pretty much a flash card version of FA with a clinical vignette, which is what I was looking for. I would say they have more info then BRS, but less then pharmcards- just the perfect amount for Step 1.
