Fellowees, please tell me if I need the BS to specialize. And my bs will be computer science.

What on earth are you talking about child?! BS, as in Bachelor of Science? Yes, I think you need a degree to get into dental school. And you need a degree from a dental school to get into a specialty program. Ergo, yes you need an undergrad degree. Does it need to be a BS: no, it can be a BA, BS, BCOMM, B$hit, whatever.

Are you trying to tell me that you'll be getting into dental school without an undergrad degree. I didn't think schools allowed that these days. 😀

ok, I stand corrected. I just spoke to someone and learned you don't need a degree to get into dental school. I'm a jerk!!

Yup... I didn't get it! 👍

The answer to the question is probably this then: you don't need a BS. 😀

I guess I am kinda lost.
The original question is whether we need a BS degree to be accepted to specialty programs. I believe Prochos has already got in to a great dental school.

To answer that question, it depends on which specialty are u considering.
Simple answer, if there is someone with the same stat in dent sch as u but with a bs degree, who will adcom choose?

i agree, and i dont agree. i'm a 2nd year dental student and i dont have a undergrad degree. i have asked the same question on many occassions and received variable answers. first off, i'm in agreement that it depends on which specialty PROGRAM. it's not as simple as taking somebody that has a BS over someone that doesnt (given similar statistics). it completely comes down to the attitude of the specialty program. i've spoken with some people that simply won't let you in to their specialty without a BS, BA, etc. (FYI, most universities will confer an undergrad degree to a student after graduation from dental school, you just have to talk to the right people.)

here's another thought: will a university confer a masters degree if there is no bachelor's degree? i have heard different answers here also. the only sure thing is that you can specialize without question in any program that is certificate only. masters programs may pose a problem.

personally, as i approach graduation i plan to contact my undergrad university about conferring a degree.

certain programs will absolutley require a 4 year degree of some kind. For example I know that there are 6 year OMFS programs which require minimum undergrad GPAs for med school admissions. without a GPA I don't know how you could get in. This is not neccasarily the case for all programs but it is for some
