Hello. Rank list is due tomorrow so I'm having a last minute freak out! I'm doing a medicine prelim (going into anesthesia) and I'm not sure if I should rank BU internal medicine. I heard I shouldn't but I only did 2 prelim interviews (boston and LA). I really want to be in Boston for intern year.

So should I take my chances scrambling into a prelim that's hopefully in Boston or should I bite the bullet and rank BU and possibly end up there 🙁

Any last minute advice would be extremely appreciated!

you would be crazy to try to scramble into a position. You most likely will not end up in boston if you do. There are so few spots left to scramble into its a big risk. Rank the two you have and go from there.

Really? Few Medicine PRELIMS? I was under the impression there were plenty of preliminary spots to scramble into... at least that's what the Dean of my school said!

Bite the bullet. BU is a great place to train. You will work hard but you will be a commando when you finish.

I think I had a brain fart and panicked. But I agree that I should be ranking BU as a prelim. Skypilot or Int Med 2008 -Do you know how BU treats prelim interns?

Thanks for the replies so far. I hope to hear more.

It will not be cush. Expect to work like you would as an intern at any major tertiary teaching hospital. The only saving grace is that it is only 12 months long and you will be in Boston on your one day off per week! 🙂

There were exactly 3 IM prelims in Massachusetts last year in the scramble, and they were all at UMass (so not in Boston). There were no TY's in the scramble in Massachusetts.

I highly suggest you rank all prelims to which you interviewed.

Thanks for the input. I have ranked the only prelim and transitional program I interviewed. Hopefully I do match but I'm prepared to scramble being that I only did 2 interviews for a pgy1 spot.

I was wondering if I could get your opinion on this matter... I'm ranking a prelim which was setup for me by a PD in another specialty (lets use Derm as an example) which is an advanced track. THe PD set it up for me b/c at that time, I expressed that I really wanted to go the program and also needed prelim interviews. Is it wrong to rank that prelim and no longer rank or rank very low the derm program?

It's an academic question now that the ROL deadline has passed.

I don't think it's a problem at all. A prelim year is a prelim year. I'm hoping that you didn't simply lie to the Derm PD, but that at that moment you really wanted to go to that program and then later changed your mind. As far as your prelim PD is concerned, as long as you do a good job they won't care either way. The Derm PD might end up upset, but that's life.
