To those Boston U dental students. Housing is quite expensive near the Boston medical campus. Im wondering, do a majority of students still live there or elsewhere. If elsewhere, do you drive in or ride the subway?

thats a good question. id like to know this too.

You may want to try Allston or Brighton which are student-type areas. It's cheaper but the tradeoff is that you have to take the T (subway) or buses to get to the campus. I was carless my first two years but then I got a car the last two years. Parking sucks around BU but I was willing to hunt it down rather than do the public trans thing.

Once you are on location in Boston, you might want to try putting your name on a waiting list at South Block for a studio - there's almost always a waiting list for this but I think studios are around $700. It's not that nice of a place but it's convenient to the school and the first year, you're going to be doing alot of studying.

3 main areas, in my opinion, would be south end, back bay, and brookline/allston area.

So would you recommend having a car?? how expensive is insurance and does BU have parking?

Depends on where you want to live. If you are living in South end or Back Bay, you wont need a car. Parking is too expensive...I live in Back Bay and it would cost me $200 a month to park my car here. Not to mention, I would probably drive once every 2 weeks.

Back bay. I sold my car before I moved here 🙁 But, I think it would only be a hassle, and a waste of money to have a car here. I walk 30 min to school. I hate the bus, and I have grown to enjoy the walk. 👍

Where do most students live... Back Bay or South end? Also, do more students live alone or with other people?

Its pretty even split for my class as far as location is concerned. Most people have roommates.

I live on the medical/dental campus in BU Housing - Harrison Court. It is a little expensive, but I enjoy going home for lunch and being able to wake up right before class and still make it. There are plenty of areas in South End and near Back Bay. I would say most people pay over $1100 per month for their places. Or, if you live near BU undergrad campus, like in Brookline, then you can take the BU shuttle to class and back. A lot of students do that now.

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has heard of the new apartments called James Court which is right across from the BU medical center. I want to know if anyone is considering about moving there and if you think that is a good location for an upcoming dental student.

I'll probably be living there next year. Brand new, underground parking, fitness center...it will be nice. The price tag is hefty (1400-1650 for a studio), but its right next to the dental school and the library.

is it true that the place around the dental school is unsafe?i heard that it's unsafe for girls to walk on their own after 7 in the evening. personally speaking i'd like to stay around the school so i can walk to school and even if i need to stay up late in the lab i can get back home in no time. but if safety is an issue i have to seriously think about it. my question is:how unsafe is the area around the school. and if i'm right sometime last year i read that students were complaining of thieves breaking into their apartments. is that true????i'd appreciate if current bu students would shed some light on this issue.

I probably leave the library 3-4 times a week at 11pm or later. I have to walk a few blocks to the bus stop and wait there for about 20 min before my bus arrives. I have yet to encounter anything remotely suspicious or threatening. Ive also never heard of any of my classmates having any issues with regards to safety in the area.

and.... how would one be able to put him/herself down on a list? is there a centralized agency for the south block?

thanks

-does anyone know how often the shuttle bus runs btw the medical campus and main campus?
-also, when does it begin and end?
edit: NM found the bus schedule site http://www.bu.edu/thebus/

-what are some good websites to search and when is the ideal time to seriously look for a place to live near BU?

-also are there any graduating BU students who want to let new students take over their apartment?

i'm starting to look into housing now just to get a feel of the cost and where i should look for.

go to Boston craigslist and start from there.. there are plenty of housing resources available..Boston is a student city so no problem finding a place..also talk to university housing they send a list to students every week..which is very helpful..

the best way to get a good apartment is to know someone who is leaving and take theirs over... All the good ones change hands this way, and all the good ones are expensive. Its Boston, you learn to pay $2400 for a two bedroom 🙂

how are BU's dorm?

it doesn't seem like such a bad idea to commute using the campus shuttle.

and the cost seems reasonable( ~ around 1k).

after looking around, i'm heavily looking into the dorms now because of the outrageous rent around the area...

I'm a 4th year dental student and i'm not sure if BU has that option for students on the medical campus. Then again, it might be something new that I dont know about.
