So I want to "try" to get into a competitive residency and honestly would rather be on either coast but what worries me is the difference in ranking between these two schools. is 30 vs 48 that big of a difference when trying to match into competitive specialties? that is the main thing that worries me.

Boston University
Pros
  • more name recognition
  • Kinda want to live on the east coast since I've lived in California my entire life
  • The mission of the school really resonated with me

Cons
  • Expensive
  • Weather

UC Irvine
Pros
  • Cost (in-state)
  • weather
  • closer to family

Cons
  • students seem like research isn't a huge focus
  • You have to drive to the hospital

Summary: Basically wondering if the ranking of the school would affect my chances of matching into a competitive residency

EDIT: UCD is out as I like UCI more than UCD

Look at home residency programs for both schools. Is the residency you are interested in have one at both schools?

Yeah the whole hospital not near campus is kinda annoying with UCI. How much more is the COA between BU and UCI?

Not sure about OPs financial aid or scholarships
but BU is roughly $55k/year and UCI is $33k IS and $37k OOS

Coming from BU undergrad I would go for a UC, the difference in rank is minimal (likely due to slightly more research dollars at BU), but more importantly the biggest draw for BU is that it's in Boston lol, so if you don't like that, don't go, if you do, go.

I'd go for the UC because after living in Boston and visting Cali for a bit I'd really like the change, so maybe the calculus is opposite for you

BU is the better school, but I don't think its worth paying a ton of extra money for tuition/living expenses. All UC's have a huge research focus, so you will have plenty of research opportunities at either school. You should have no problem matching into a competitive specialty from either school, just take a look at the recent match lists. Another thing to consider - if you know you want to do residency on the west coast, it will help if you went to a CA med school.
