What happens to the residents?
So is this legit? Thought this would have turned into a bigger discussion.
I'm sure a lot of people are afraid to talk for resk of being identified, also there has been discussion of the program circling the drain for some time now so it's not like it's a surprise to people.
I always wonder what happens to patients in situations like this. Plastics and ENT can absorb a lot of the hospital stuff, but the dentoalveolar need for ASA III and IV patients and those on Medicaid in a metro area the size of Buffalo doesn't really get filled by anyone else. It's sad. Residencies area pretty social safety net in healthcare.
Similar to the Hahnemman Hospital (Drexel OMFS) and Medical College of Wisconsin closures, residents strike out on their own to find a spot at another program. If they are unable to find a spot, CODA looks at the case volume/open positions of other programs and see where they could fit in, potentially forcing busier programs to take on another resident.
The current situation with an abnormally high number of "free agents" who have been dismissed from/left certain programs makes for an interesting landscape. I'm sure programs with high volume and open spots (UAB) will end up taking some of the displaced Buffalo residents.
I feel bad for everyone involved. What a nightmare. Bad if you're single with no financial/emotional support, even worse if you have to uproot your family to finish training elsewhere
still dont understand why they took someone for a 4-year path in Nov 2025 if **** was going down. Mind you the 4-year path was not even disclosed anywhere (PASS or website) when the person got in Buffalo OMFS for it. Too many questions.

Indeed. But recently being on the interview trail, I haven't heard suspicions/worries as much as I did about Buffalo about any other program. But we shall see.

True, but at the same time a lot of us (if not all) already knew this during the interview trail. I know several applicants (myself included) who chose not to interview or rank the program at all. Personally, I’d rather post-match or reapply than end up somewhere like that.
I also met a few people who were defending Buffalo and saying it’s just rumors from SDN. But programs don’t usually get that kind of reputation for no reason, you can choose to believe it or not, but it’s on all of us to do our own research.
I feel really lucky that I matched at my #1 and had a completely different experience. At the end of the day, some people would rather match anywhere, even if it’s a toxic environment that will burn them out, than risk not matching at all
Can second this as someone who was on the interview trail and declined the Buffalo interview. Heard from people who went that it was bad as I had heard. Feeling horrible for those who matched there and the current residents.
Heard some things, as everyone does, about other programs but nothing (except maybe 1) rivaled Buffalo.

There is official notices and updates kept on the CODA website.
Although not every program is accounted for in these accreditation notices or Site Visit Reports. These reports don't give much context or detail and, based on the Buffalo situation in this thread, when compared to the reports should be viewed as additional information/another data point to guide decision making in addition to what has already been mentioned. I hardly ever see these reports being brought up, even when some are significant.
For Example the US Army Dental Activity/Ft Gordon, Ft. Gordon, GA program is closing in June based on the official reports through a Teach Out. This has been done with former programs like St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, New York, NY which closed in 2017. Or that Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood, IL had been notified of intent to withdraw accreditation since Summer 2024 if not fixed by 1/2025 then again by 8/2025 and was cleared in Summer of 2025 but then Winter 2026 has reporting requirements again by 2/2028.

This is very interesting, thank you. What I got from it was as you said, they aren't being transparent. Maybe some small takeaways though tbh I couldn't get much.
- Approval without reporting requirements is best
- Approval with report requirements - approved but maybe some questions (case log, reporting hours, etc)
- Noncompliance - some concern. But in every program here, some had "reports of non-compiance", but status is approval either without reporting or with reporting requirements.
Notably, Buffalo was approval without reporting requirements in the most recent visit (2023). Either they had major issues since then (totally possible), or we aren't filled in on the whole scoop.
So yeah, seems like they aren't being transparent on this in their public reporting. I'm not sure if it's even fair for an applicant to look at the few programs listed with "Reported Noncompliance" if the status was approved, while programs like Buffalo were never reported.
The meaning of everything is all available, but not easy to find, without need to guess what it stands for.

IV. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES RELATED TO ACCREDITATION OF PROGRAMS
A. ACCREDITATION STATUS DEFINITIONS
1. Programs That Are Fully Operational:
Approval (without reporting requirements): An accreditation classification granted to an educational program indicating that the program achieves or exceeds the basic requirements for accreditation.
Approval (with reporting requirements): An accreditation classification granted to an educational program indicating that specific deficiencies or weaknesses exist in one or more areas of the program. Evidence of compliance with the cited standards or policies must be demonstrated within a timeframe not to exceed eighteen (18) months if the program is between one and two years in length or two years if the program is at least two years in length. If the deficiencies are not corrected within the specified time period, accreditation will be withdrawn, unless the Commission extends the period for achieving compliance for good cause.
Identification of new deficiencies during the reporting time period will not result in a modification of the specified deadline for compliance with prior deficiencies.
Circumstances under which an extension for good cause would be granted include, but are not limited to:
• sudden changes in institutional commitment;
• natural disaster which affects affiliated agreements between institutions; faculty support; or facilities;
• changes in institutional accreditation;
• interruption of an educational program due to unforeseen circumstances that take faculty, administrators or students away from the program.

I simply condensed the notices into a simpler format to read by providing only the OMS programs and clustering them by state and their chronological activity over time.
There’s a lot of info it’s just a matter of picking out what’s relevant. Like in the “2026 Advanced Site Schedule” it mentions a 5/5/2026 visit just yesterday for a “Cooper University” - OMS in Camden, NJ. There’s not much else besides that anywhere I’ve seen, I assume it’s a new program.
Likewise I noted in another thread JOMS had an advertisement hiring a PD for a Marquette OMS program, but that’s not on the CODA website.
Yeah. It's difficult to interpret like you said. For instance I was a noncat at one of these programs that have "approval with reporting requirements." They were a good place but probably didn't report hours. So maybe that's what they got questioned on, because they definitely operated a lot, no flaws there.
It's an interesting concept that they share some form of public assessment of these programs, but there's so much fluff in there that I can't really trust their assessment. I don't think we need a play by play on every program, but we need to know which ones are crashing.
We need tighter regulation, and less programs. We don't need these new programs popping up. Clearly they let programs off the hook until **** hits the fan. On the flip side, how strict should they be if it would require programs shutting down? Qualified residents don't deserve to go to a crashing program, but what would you do with a bunch of programs shutting down, where do you send those current residents?
