Hello,

I received Buffalo SDM's acceptance packet a few days ago, and while I was reading it I've found something quite interesting.

It states that "SDM does not anticipate offering a clinical licensing examination in the 2011-12 academic year and beyond."

Since I won't graduate until 2012, how is this gonna affect me if I choose to attend UB dental school? Does that mean I will need to travel to other schools in order to take WREB/NERB?

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it.

Has buffalo started to send the packet already? I thought they were doing only after Feb.

hi..i applied to UB too...whats your stats..if you don't mind sharing...i havn't heard from them as yet..

That is interesting, I am a 3rd year and they haven't mentioned that before. We are currently trying to get them to give the WREB but I don't know if that is going to happen. It will be a serious PITA and Pain in the Wallet to travel to Cleveland for the WREB. This is one thing that I am very dissapointed in with Buffalo. We will see what happens.

Here's my reasoning as to why UB currently has that stance: UB is a SUNY school (NYS's public school system) and so the interests of the school lie with students who are New York State residents. As of January 2007, NYS no longer accepts any examinations for licensure - graduates are required to complete at least one year of post-graduate training. It's a huge cost to the school to offer a licensure exam, as the school shuts down for almost 4 days during various parts of the exam. It doesn't make sense to do this if we assume that mostly NYS students will be at a SUNY dental school.

Now before all you UT and CA students get angry about this, know that we do currently offer the NERB and a number of students in my class are taking the WREB. I would say that of the 85 students in my class, 45 are taking the NERB and 10 plan on taking the WREB. Because of this, the school is offering the NERB on-site. Our school has been a testing site for the NERB for a number of years. I would venture to guess that if the students made known to administration that they wanted UB to remain a testing site, and there were enough students taking the exam to make it a reasonable request (i.e. 40 students taking it, not 15), the administration would see what they could do.

In my time at UB, I've definitely found that if you make known to the administration the concerns of the class, they listen and take action. So come to UB - it's a spectacular school clinically - and be an advocate for your examination when the time comes. Personally, I don't feel that the licensure issue should be a dealbreaker for such a great school at such a low tuition cost. Good luck wherever you choose to attend!
