Hey guys

Because the peg test at ASDOH owned me, Is there anything I could do to build up my hand skills before dental school? I couldn't do anything with my left hand and my right was barely competent. I thought about taking a sculpture class at the art school but damn it was hella expensive and Im not sure how dental related it would be.

Thanks!

*damn! I have no idea what he's talking about, am I behind??? am I suppose to be preparing for this peg test?????!! but then again, he's a dental student, perhaps he posted on the wrong forum???*

Well, one of my advisors did recommend me to take a sculpture class once, so I guess it can help, but I'm not sure.

Try knitting or taking up guitar to increase manual dexterity - but honestly they'll teach you what you need to know in dental school, it just might take you longer than it takes others. 🙂

Haha, don't feel bad, I bought my own pegboard and practiced for two weeks before my interview. LOL. I would recommend either buying a model car or plane with small pieces and try putting it together. Or try a little bit of wax carving.

Can you hold a mirror in your non-dominant hand? cuz that's mostly what it'll be doing. As for your dominant hand, they'll teach you how to hold and manipulate your tools. There's a technique that makes it a snatch. No need to worry. The peg test was completely random and don't even simulate the hand motions required of a dentist.

Hey sorry I've been on sdn too long, the peg test is a manual dextrirty test for the asdoh interview. It's not too difficult just different.

How do I take up wax carving?

What would I say to my girlfriend sorry we are gonna have to break up bc I have to build up my hand schools before school?

break up with your girlfriend

x2

seriously though.

1) you're not supposed to talk about the peg test. didn't you sign a form?

2) try playing an instrument.

3) build models

4) go to a dental lab and beg them to teach you

The first rule of Peg test is you dont tell ANYONE about peg test.

The Hands will come, quickly really. It is actually about the eyes, knowing what to look for, and what angle to see it from. That is what takes the training in my opinion. It is also why angle ranking on the DAT may just be the most important part of that entire test. How can you train yourself to see draw (taper) or to see if you are on the long axis of a tooth? Well... that is what your pre-clinical courses are for. Until then... just play Guitar Hero. Or try this

Thanks for the replies but none of this stuff really interests me, I may just try to be around the dentist office more. Ive shadowed a ton but I'd like to get to see the business side of dentistry more. Otherwise I think I'm just going to binge drink, get in excellent shape, go on spring break, finish up my internship while doing as little work as possible, and most importantly get off my addiction to SDN I developed this year. I might also try to brush up on my sciences because I havn't taken a science course since last December.

If you could put out a video on how to binge drink and get in excellent shape, there would be no need for going to ds my friend.

Just listen to the other dental students here, the hand skills will come.

As a pre-dental student i've been working on extra circular activities outside of the classroom to put on my application. When i found out theres a part of the application that asks you to list ways you exhibit manual dexterity ...i got worried i had no things to put down....so i took sculpture this semester......and have a lot of hands on work in the research lab i work in .....a lot extractions......tissue work which involves preparing slides....damn that stuff was hard in the beg. lol.....im thinking about taking painting next semester........and im trying to pick up the piano hopefully it works out.........I know they wanna see that ur good with your hands......getting yourself ready for this type of precision is good regardless....instruments and artistic talents r the way to go......and this will make you a diverse candidate i think so
