i know that everyone says that intern can be incredibly tough and it's easy to burn out. i feel like a lot of things in my life are falling apart right now (particularly with my relationship with my significant other and with my friends) and i find that i'm dreading going to work everyday.

i'm just so afraid that this ISN'T going to end when i finish my intern year and that residency in general is turning me into a tired, snippy, disinterested person. do others feel the same and (more importantly) do relationships get back to better places once you finish the year?

🙁

I would think it would be hard to maintain friends outside the hospital, but I have observed groups of residents/interns who are very social and therefore support each other during residency. I would guess that a surgery residency is harder than other types i.e. family practice in general, but I think that if you are at a malignant program it is worse. I would think life would get better as you progress through residency, what is so hard about hospital life? The attedings? other residents?

I am feeling very burned out right now. I am on call every other weekend, my step 3 is in a week and a half and my house that I wanted on the market a month ago still isn't ready to sell.

I attended a lecture on 'burnout in the medical field' given by a psychiatrist. Basically the lower you are on the totem pole, the more likely you are to experience burnout. The main idea was if you stick it out, things are more than likely to get better.
