The Bush medicare plan was formally announced today. There is an article in the New York Times about it.

What does everyone think of this plan to allow for full drug coverage only if someone signs on to a private insurance plan?

i think it's crap
also, discount cards are a joke. as if paying $90 instead of $100 per month for drugs is going to help anyone who SIMPLY CAN'T AFFORD IT. It's a travesty that this is ALL that Medicare beneficiaries are going to get for the next 3 years.
What a huge disappointment. This proposal flies in the face of all the research that's been done in this field over the last 5-10 years.
No one has proven that Medicare HMOs cut costs or give better quality care. Plus, most people don't have access to Medicare HMOs. Hey, Bushie, in case you didn't know, HMOs have been withdrawing like crazy from the Medicare program!
It's a shame. Who's idea was this???

I read the NY times article, and it looks as though the administration is leaving the toughest decisions to Congress. I like the idea of trying to get HMOs and insurance companies to compete with one another but I don't know if it's right to force seniors to enter into a private health care plan to receive full medicare/medicaid benefits. (Some might argue it's not fair that money is taken out of our paychecks to pay for the health coverage).

Once Congress gets to working on the plan we'll be able to see where Bush really wants this plan to go.

I think its alot better than Hillarycare (universal coverage paid for by the government). This way, atleast market forces are in play. Government workers are under the same plan proposed by Bush I believe. I think anytime you give people choices, its better.
