I got a C in biology I a couple of semesters ago. I was a freshman and didn't really understand what it meant to be in a real science class (since I am a psych major). Should I retake the class and work my ass off for that A, or should I bag it and move on to the other pre-med requirements?

Thanks!

So you're saying that psych majors don't know what it's like to be in a "real" science class? I'm a psych major and I nailed every science class I ever took... :meanie:

No, don't repeat it (unless your school requires you to, which I doubt). Take another one (preferably a harder one) and ace it.

:luck:

Okay, that makes sense... So something like, Cell Bio, which is required for schools like USC... Would that do the trick?

Psychology classes are certainly more research based than they used to be. But they still aren't like biology and chemistry. Psych is easy! 😀

yup, cell bio works...

yeah, psych is definitely not like bio or chem, but then again, that's what kept me sane throughout my premed days...😀

Move on; start with Bio II, then take something like Cell Bio, Biochem, or something similar. Do well in everything from here on out. Good luck!

Don't retake "C" grades. Take something in the Biology Department that has a higher course number and get and "A". Cell Biology, Cell Biochemistry, Molecular Biology/Genetics and Human Anatomy all come to mind as good courses to take. Don't get any more "C"s.

I wouldn't retake it, but I would have a damn good reason as to why I got a C in a basic bio class when I was interviewing. Using the excuse "I'm not used to a real science class" isn't going to cut it. If you use that, they'll only reply back with "how do you plan on dealing with the first two years of medical school?".

The whole idea is that I had to learn how to study for real sciences. They're not impossible whatsoever, just a different style. And as a freshman I didn't take that class as seriously as I should. I've become a pre-med since then. I have one C, and every other grade is an A/A+. And I will be taking Biochem, BioII, and Cell Bio.

P.S. The whole first paragraph is the past tense vin5cent0. I've learned 😉

Don't retake it. Just take an upper division course.

I definitely agree with the responses, DONT RETAKE!! Use it as a way to motivate you to perform better in the upper division courses. I got a C+ in my Bio 2 course as a freshmen, it was really a wake up call for me , havent gotten anything less than an A- since. Med schools will loke more closely at your upper division courses anyways. Show improvement! Its better than an A in intro Bio and a C in cell bio as a junior.

If Biology is not used as a "weeding out" course at your school, I would seriously think about your motivation before you enroll in your next pre-med requirement. There are rough Bio courses out there--for instance the one I took has orgo as a co-requisite and counts as biochem at many schools--and those are meant to scare students with C's...some of the med schools know which schools those belong to, b/c they accept them in lieu of biochem/cell bio, etc. But if you got a C in a standard 1st semester bio course that wasn't brutally curved, I would be concerned what will happen when you go into "real science classes" like Orgo.

I'm not saying you can't do them, I'm just saying I wouldn't do them until you are absolutely positive you are in the right frame of mind, b/c once the grades are on your transcript, they aren't going anywhere...unfortunately. Sit. Think. Rethink. Take them a little later than other people if you need to.

Almost everyone has said "don't retake, just ace a higher level class". I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you couldn't get above a C in BIO I, then you probably should not expect to just ace all the others. It seems like you have discovered what the issue was, so move on to BIO II. However, if you find that you still can't get above a C, it is pretty clear that "just acing" every other class is very unlikely.

Don't bother. I got a D in Bio I and I did fine! Just make sure that it doesn't happen again!
