Hi there,
So it looks like I will get a C in biochemistry this semester. I’m hoping with the final I can get it up to a B-. Right now I have a 3.91 GPA. I have A’s in orgo and my other science classes. I’m wondering how much this will effect my chances and if I should retake the class if I get a C? I am taking Biochem II in the spring and hoping that will turn out better. I am just worried this could ruin my chances by tanking my gpa.

someone just asked a similar question. note: ONE or a few low grades won't kill your chances at all

I'm in a pretty similar position as you, though I anticipate getting a couple B's in classes, rather than a C, I have no business getting B's in because of September-October laziness. Just remember how good of a position you're in overall and, and honestly, be prepared to make up for the deficits when you relearn for the MCAT.

If you get a C, be sure to do better in Biochem II.

"C"'s are not good.

Make sure you try to get it up to at least B range.

I understand this is an old topic, but would a C in biochemistry be the end of the world. I was wondering how COVID might change the perceptions of admissions, I am planning for DO if that helps. I will get an A in 2 other classes and likely a B+ in my third one. My Sgpa is a 3.54, please any advice would be helpful and appreciated.

My professor doesn't teach the class for biochemistry and instead uploads videos (reads verbatim the slides) and quizzes/tests are extremely difficult, with no preparation. Doesn't use the textbook or anything else but her videos, I don't feel confident in my learning. Any tips?

Edit: I do see now that this thread is focused on MD. I would like to point out that MD is my first choice but understand that DO schools might be a better fit for me.

It probably won't be the end of the world, but I would be concerned about content deficiencies for the MCAT and medical school, both of which are biochemistry heavy.

Biochem is but one of the many subjects in medical school, amongst pharm, A&P, embryology, endocrinology, etc. etc. etc.
No, a C in biochem is NOT the end of the world.
@HighYieldContent what's your cumulative GPA? sGPA Is not as important as cGPA--by a wide margin.

Go to office hours. Talk to your prof and go over your quizzes/tests with her. If your class is hybird/online, schedule a Zoom meeting/phone call. Just getting to know the professor can give you a better idea of the kinds of questions she will ask.

Why do you say this? My understanding is that this is absolutely not true, and sGPA being as important is precisely why it is broken out, rather than allowing it to remain buried in the all important cGPA.

That's definitely false, sGPA tend to be lower than cGPA due to science courses being more difficult to get As in general, but sGPA is equally important, if not more.

A C in one course isn't lethal. Even an F wouldn't be. So chill.

My cumulative GPA is a 3.6 and I will definitely talk to my professor about it, thank you.

Thanks for the advice, I was just worried since it was biochem. I will definitely review it thoroughly for MCAT prep.
My N=1 got C in Organic Chem but got admitted to one of the new schools which gave full tuition scholarship. So forget about the C and work on rest of the things needed for the app.
