C in ochm

So I got my first C in ochm. how bad is that interms of how a med school would see it ? should I retake it ? I feel like I leanred a lot and I dont think my grade reflects my understanding of ochm. I got an A in ochm lab though, does that make it any better ?

Just kidding. As everyone might tell you in a couple moments... Don't stress too much. A C in Organic Chemistry (first semester I assume) is not ideal, but it's not the end of the world either. Generally, most people say either, "Nothing lower than a C in pre-reqs" or "retake any Cs". So all in all, it's really up to you. If you apply to allopathic schools, the C will still be factored into both of your GPAs so in the long run, if you retake OChem and get an A, it'll average to a B (as far as I understand).

If you feel confident in the material, then prove it in OChem 2! Then you might be able to pass it off as a just a lapse.

My opinion, don't worry too much about it, just do better from here on out. Good luck!

An A in OChem II will redeem the C. You needn't repeat the class since you feel you understand the material well. If you blow OChem II, your last chance of redemption is a good grade in Biochem. A lot of schools let you take OChem II or Biochem to fulfill their requirements. If the teacher you'll have will be difficult to excel with, you might consider going on to Biochem if the schools you want to attend allow the substitution. Or take OChem II elsewhere.

Yes, I wouldn't retake the class. A C is a pass, and if you can get an A in the second semester, that should show the med schools you understand the subject, and you would have redeemed yourself.

I got a C(+) in OChem (II) and have gotten 4 acceptances so far. And trust me-I am nothing out of the ordinary-I have definitely not invented the cure for anything 😛

C+ in Ochem III here too...I got some great interviews, but no acceptances yet! Btw, only Harvard asked me about the C+ in my interview.

Yes, they will be looking at individual classes and may even ask you about specific courses, but in the sake of the amount of time they have to spend going through thousands of applicants, it's really going to be overshadowed by your sGPA, so I wouldn't stress too much. I didn't do good in the pre-req courses (relatively, and on average), but my sGPA was good and my MCAT was alright, so I don't think they looked too much into my C in OChem 1, my C- & W in Chem 2, my Bs in general bio, and my B- in OChem 2.

Just make sure your sGPA is good and 85-90% of what they're looking at (academically) to offer an interview is going to be based off of cGPA, sGPA, & MCAT.

yea exactly what helped make up for those grades b/c I assume you got a few B's in other classes you haven't mentioned?

I can only see an acceptance from a "solid" medical that is DO (counting the highest grade for GPA calc). You're GPA with those classes factored in and counting just the pre-reqs could barely exceed a 3.0 only if you got an A in all other classes. Please let us know what stats you ended up with.

Dididog was accepted to Tulane with a good MCAT score, after attending an SMP. I'd call that a solid success, despite a few blips in the road, which highlights that one should never give up as there's always another way to get to the goal.

well... I just finished up my Fall term and figured out that I had a C in organic chemistry too ..
I do feel that I have understood the materials .. but I think it has to do with my studying style or something ..
anyways .. no .. i don't think u need to retake it .. it's only your first C .. and it all matters when it comes to the GPA of all of the pre-requisits ...

besides .. grades are not the only thing that medical schools consider .. volunteering, undergraduate research, MCAT, leadership positions are as important as the GPA .. so it's not the end of the world .... for us ..

as everyone has said, one C is not going to doom you. but I have a question for some of the ppl who replied and said "oh, just get an A in o-chem II." really, how likely is it that someone who got a C in o-chem I will get an A in o-chem II? the material builds on itself as you go along throughout the o-chem sequence. I took o-chem at a school on the quarter system, and the classes definitely got smaller in number from I to II to III (I really noticed this when I was an o-chem lab TA the following year...ppl were dropping like flies). our profs even stated in the syllabus that if you got a C in I (or II), you should go talk to them b/c they would try to dissuade you from taking the next course in the series. anyhow, I loved o-chem and find it hard to believe everyone doesn't 🙂 but seriously, how likely is it for someone to go from a C to an A?

oh, to the OP: you need to work way harder next semester. do all practice problems, go to office hours with questions, go to study groups and spend some time on o-chem every day. don't get behind. don't do whatever you did last quarter cos it isn't working. good luck!

My problem was that I loved it (a lot) but it did not at all love me back...I used to refer to orgo as an abusive boyfriend all of freshman year. Hilarious.

It's actually not that hard to go from a C in organic 1 to an A in organic 2. The two styles of the classes are fairly large. Prepare to hammer some mechanisms in two.

If someone really tried hard and got a C due to harsh grade-curving practices by the professor, then picking a well-researched, more liberal professor for the second course can make a huge difference. On the other hand, if someone got a C because they had trouble grasping the material, then they won't get an A in OChem II no matter how much work thy put in. I think most who take OChem as a premed, enter the class wth a healthy dose of fear (I sure did), knowing it's a weedout course, so they are likely to put in maximum effort.
