C in Orgo I
Started by dapmp91
Purely anecdotal, but... I have a friend who got a C+ in orgo 1 and C in orgo 2. She was accepted at 2 medical schools.

A "C" isn't going to kill your application. I got a C in Orgo I and a B in Orgo II. Unless you are on a very tight timeline, there is no reason to postpone application or look into SMP's. The core sciences are weed-outs; you can demonstrate competency by doing well in the upper-level classes.
One was Drexel, but I don't remember which school the other one was. They were not her first choices, but they were still US programs (and therefore great!). I don't know how her other numbers and ECs match up against your stats but I don't think that one course would sink your chances of attending medical school. I got a C in calc and I'm not going to let it keep me out of medical school.
Still, if you feel that the C accurately represents your understanding of orgo 1 then it may be helpful to retake it before taking orgo 2. I'm sorry that I don't have a more definite answer. Good luck!

thanks for the feedback, I got a B in calc I and calc II, I got a C+ in orgo I (I think he gave me the + because I did really good on his pop quizzes), We had 5 tests around 12-15 pages each, the shortest test was 12 pages, anyways I think I will take my chances with Orgo II and try getting an A, thanks again guys for the support,,,i luv u guys 😳

You're not going to get an A in O. Chem II. Please try to set more realistic expectations for yourself. 🙂
I got a C in Orgo I should I retake it, make sure I ace Orgo II, should I postpone applying to medical school and apply to postbac or a masters prorgram, my overall GPA is 3.4 and science GPA is around 3.2, thanks for your advice guys!
quit partying so much and focus on orgo. Orgo is one of the easiest classes, as long as you put in a couple of hours each day. Otherwise, you need to realistically think about medicine. Some people just aren't cut our for it, and that's the harsh reality. Some people, no matter how much they study, just aren't gifted and that's the bottom line.

I disagree with the first part, A level O. Chem. certainly does not require several hours of work a day. I completely agree with your latter comment.
gifted. Oh, god.
would you prefer i say "inherent ability"
gifted. Oh, god.
Heh, I was in the "gifted" program in highschool, but rather than groom myself for the SAT/ACT I spent my time making RPGs and various versions of pong in Q-Basic. Apparently they mistook me for the future of America or something because of an IQ test I took in the fifth grade🙄
dude, you won't be getting an A in ochem2 if you got a C in ochem1. sorry...ochem2 just builds onto ochem1. if you're lousy in ochem1, you're gonna start out weak in ochem2. you can either prevent this by either 1) retaking ochem1 which will show you can do ochem and also better prepare you for ochem2 or 2) just study the areas you were weak in in ochem1 before ochem2 starts and you'll be good. if you want just a B in ochem2, then you don't really need to do anything. i got Bs in ochem1 and 2 but whatever i don't really care. if you want to save your time and get a good grade in ochem2, then focus more on just memorizing the reactions and less time on the concepts. for the sake of learning, you want to focus on the concepts but for the sake of only getting a good grade just memorize the reactions. if you want both great learning and great grades from it, then you do have to put in a considerable amount of time into it. i'd spend all my time understanding why the mechanism of a certain rxn worked the way it did but then the test would only ask you to draw the product of the reaction. i don't know whatever floats your boat...i just can't get myself to blindly memorize stuff unless i learn why it works the way it does. i just have no incentive to memorize unless i'm actually learning from it and not regurgitating info. this isn't always the best way to get good grades tho hehe, at least not for me cuz i start studying late and then run out of time to fully memorize something well enough to recall it fast enough for the test. you really need a balance...
I don't think a C will kill your chances, just don't get too many of them. If it were me I'd think about retaking it. Either that, or you'd better have a good excuse like your hand broke in the middle of an exam or something. I do know of a few people here in Fl who got a C in orgo 1 and retook getting at least B's, so it is def. possible. Can't say what happened to them with regards to acceptance, but don't freak out too much. Enjoy the break and maybe see if you could squeeze in orgo1 again.
Also, I think the gpa is a bigger concern than one orgo course. I'd think about a master's, some post-bacc, or focus on something like carrib. or DO. Either that or pull off a miracle on the mcat. Good luck either way👍
