SilverBandCry! said:I've had a difficult semester (family issues etc) and took a lot of hard science courses ended up getting a C- in Orgo II. I got an A- in Orgo I and I know that I could have done better in the class. So I was wondering would med schools consider if I retake the course over the summer and do much better the second time around? I know that I could have done better, and that is why it really sucks. How much would this affect my chances for med school? I have gotten A/A-/B+'s in my other science courses.
Thanks!

OSUdoc08 said:Only retake a C- if the number grade is below 70.
SilverBandCry! said:It is above a 70 but I am definitely going to retake because I know that I could do better. I feel like crap because of this. I've never gotten a grade this bad in my life

It's a waste of time to retake it. Do well in subsequent courses.
Don't listen to these pre-meds who don't actually know what it takes to get into medical school.

SilverBandCry! said:You are probably an exception. And I have free time and know that I could have probably have done better. Spring semester was really ****ty for me.
Punkn said:If you decide not to re-take it, just make sure your school will accept the C-. Some say you must have a C or above for the class to count. Personally, I think you should take some upper-level classes and do really well in them.

Even if there was an FAQ, people wouldn't read it. Everyone thinks their situation is special and wants their own thread. You could truly close down most of pre-allo in favor of an FAQ.Oculus Sinistra said:I would retake it, even if that ~70 rule works at some places. It will be a lot easier to smooth over in an interview if they bring up your C and you say, "Yes, but I had some issues that I corrected, retook it, and got an A."
But it's your choice of course.
There really really really really needs to be an FAQ at the top of the pre-MD forum answering questions like this.
OSUdoc08 said:The rule is 70 or above. For some schools a C is 70, and a C- is below 70. In this case, the C- would not be accepted. In the OP's case, the C- WILL be accepted, since it is a 70.
Law2Doc said:Most colleges don't grade by numerical final grades, they give you a grade out of 4.0. And under that system a C- does not equal a C. Thus schools that explicitly require a C or better in all prereqs won't be satisfied with a C-, I don't think. Check with the schools.
OSUdoc08 said:Ok, if you like the 4.0 scale better, then I'll use that.
The minimum you must acheive for a pre-med course to count is 2.0
This can be a C at some schools and a C- at other schools.
If the C- is a 2.0 or above, it will be fine, and does not need to be retaken. Obviously anything below 2.0 would not be acceptable.
