Here is my problem. I am a senior biology and chemistry major at a major public university. I will be applying for medical school for 2010 application year. I have gotten a 4.0 until this semester where I got a B+ in biochemistry and C in vertebrate embryology. I am extremely worried because of this semester grades. I do realize that I had two jobs for about 20 hours a week and I volunteered for a few hours every week as well. however, I was also overconfident and did not study as much. Because of this semester, my GPA is going from a 4.0 to 3.78. I don't think I can avoid this semester's grades from the medical schools but i was just wondering how medical schools are going to take this . I got a 31 on the MCAT with 12 on BS, 11 in PS and 8 in verbal. I am usually a good student by just slipped for one semester. By the end of this semester, I did learn how to manage my time with a tough course load. I did wanted took two jobs with a tough course load which included biochemistry II to show medical schools that I can handle a heavy course load. Unfortunately, I ended up with a B and a "C." I think I have a good reason for the decline in grades when they ask at the interview.

Did my chances for medical schools come down drastically? Am I still a good candidate for medical schools? I am just looking into my state school and a few private schools that have my GPA and MCAT average. Any help would be greatly appreciated still I am extremely disappointed and worried right now. Thank you so much.

TWO grades brought your 3.5 years of 4.0 down to a 3.78?!
or am i being ******ed and you mean your semester gpa is 3.78?
if it us the latter, im sure you have nothing to worry about.

ughhh really dude really. Yes you are still a good candidate. Are you getting into Harvard, no your state school yes. There you go, consider your ego stroked.

That is a good way of looking into. My ego is definitely stroked. Yes, my BCPM GPA did go from a 4.0 to 3.78 because I have very few undergraduate sciences classes. A lot of my science credits are AP credits which do not go into GPA. The only thing that worries me is that I will be really nervous until I get accepted because of this "C." I was really confident and exited for medical school application until this point. Anyway, thanks for the replies. I feel a little better now considering there is nothing I can do now about it. I will just have to keep my fingers crossed.:xf:

im sure you are fine. people get in with multiple C's. after a certain point, gpa is not stressed and you have to stand out in other ways. apply early + broadly.

how can your gpa be down to 3.78 with only a 3.2? you either took 100 credits in 1 semester or took no credits in the other 7 semesters

i only have 42 science credits taken from undergraduate. I have 16 BCPM credits that do not count toward my BCPM GPA since those are AP credits. Since I made a C and B in science courses, I got a 3.78 BCPM GPA. My total GPA came down to 3.86. Hope this is clear

You have no chance with a U.S. Allo school.

Good luck in the Caribbean. 👍

What? You got to be kidding. I don't think a C will keep me away from US medical schools without looking at all my grades.

also I have a 3.78 science and 3.86 overall GPA which is pretty good for a lot of medical schools. Besides my 31 MCAT is on average with many medical schools. I also have a very good reason for getting a C. I will retake this class if I have to. I hope that I do not have to do that.

Im not from america, so i dont know how your GPA's work but if you retake a class is the first grade wiped and only the second used?

no, they get averaged. all credits are counted.

edit: unless you are applying to DO schools. they take your retake.

and if you change your bachelor do they take the first or second?
if you fail a paper ?

you report transcripts from both degrees and all institutions you have taken courses in beyond high school level (as in including community college, summer college courses).

Then what was the purpose of this asinine thread?

I still think the Caribbean is the most viable option for you at this point.

Send me a pina colada. 👍

The purpose of this thread is to reaffirm my understanding that "C" might be still ok for some state schools in US.

Many people on this very board have received one/several acceptances to US Allopathic medical schools with multiple C's, D's, and even a few F's.
