How realistic is the rotation of "Carter" in the ER first season.

I just finished watching it all and if that's accurate, I had no idea med students had that much responsibility during a rotation... if it's true I think it's great, but I'd like some feedback from those of you with experience.

Thank you,
Johnny

If Carter were one of my classmates doing EM, I would probably have demoted myself back to the preclinical years!

Seriously, they give medical students on ER just a little more leadway than they get in real life (at least at my institution). The job of the 3rd and 4th year medical student is primarily to take a good focused H&P, make a concise and informative presentation, and then perform minor procedures (suture, splint, remove sutures, and maybe a few others).

Performing ACLS, cracking chests, and providing the primary diagnosis and workup are not what we do. We may occassionally be allowed to assist in these more dramatic and life-threatening scenarios, but I can assure you that no ER wants to take responsibility for a 3rd year student assuming the role of a senior resident/attending.

That's not to say that some medical students don't get a little more responsibility than others by demonstrating their skills and knowledge, but I wouldn't count on being a Carter or one of the other medical student types portrayed on ER...
