Hi All,

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I sent in my primary on 7/23 and I finally have all my secondaries in.
My stats:
3.5+/35 (up from 12/10/11)
CA resident
reapplicant
Non-URM

3 years translational research work experience (4 co-author pubs, research award from lower impact journal, numerous abstracts/conference presentations)
1 year undergraduate research
ED clinical volunteer work ~200 hrs
medical internship during college 2 yrs
science tutor 1.5 yrs
homeless-type volunteering ~50 hrs
disadvantaged youth sports coach ~20 hrs
int'l medical mission work ~1 week

Letters of rec. should be solid, but nothing extraordinary.

I'm wondering whether I need to add more schools/looking for school suggestions. Money is a bit tight, but I'd rather spend it now than spend another year not in med school.

Hi,

I think it may be helpful to talk a little about why you think you may not have gotten into medical schools last cycle if you don't mind? Did you get interviews? What do you think your weaknesses were, and do you think you strengthened those for this cycle?

Thanks!

Thanks for reading my post!

I went 3/3 on waiting lists last year. My most promising prospect was an alternate spot for one school which I am reapplying to this year.

I think my app last year was lacking significant clinical experiences that I could talk at length about. My stats/ECs were also below average to average for my ethnic group. As far as improvements go, I've done more consistent clinical volunteer work at the county hospital with some limited shadowing of familiar residents. I took some post-bacc coursework and retook my MCAT; with the marginal increase in GPA and modest bump in MCAT score I now feel closer to average than below. I've also published several more abstracts and a paper, but I don't think it affects my app significantly as research experience was one of my app's stronger points.

I do feel that I've addressed these self-diagnosed weaknesses and that my app has improved, but I'm not sure if what I've done is enough or maybe it's something else that I've overlooked.

I'd cut back on the OOS public schools (shown in bold red), who favor their home team applicants, and add some more medium tiers (say, like Baylor, Duke or Pitt, plus UCLA)
