For those who did a residency outside of California and applied for an Osteopathic Medical License...did you do the Live Scan fingerprinting or did you send in fingerprinting cards? In order to expedite things, I'm thinking of flying out to CA to do the Live Scan (results take days with Live Scan compared to supposedly 16 weeks for fingerprinting), but this technicality in their language has me worried...

"Fingerprint Cards
Applicants residing outside California, you must use the manual fingerprint card process"

"Live Scan
Applicants residing in California must use the Live Scan process. (If a Live Scan site is not available near you, please contact the Board office for further instructions. Live Scan Process.)

So can applicants residing outside of CA use the Live Scan instead? I know people have done it for the MD CA license. I tried contacting the office but they're not getting back to me via email or phone ;(

Thanks for your help!

Why would the rules differ between MDs and DOs? I'm not a DO but I did the fingerprints and it was fine. Just do the fingerprints and express mail it to them. Trust me, the fingerprinting is not the rate limiting step in the CA license process. It's them confirming your application is complete and the wait afterwards

I did fingerprints in PA and mailed them. Agreed that it's just the confirmation process that takes forever.

Yeah, if you want to work there next July your application needs to be in right about now.

I just looked through my emails and from submission of my application to approval it took 3 months. Which is probably about standard for most licenses. Except NJ which is apparently in the Stone Age still and does everything with paper...

That being said, a bigger hold up will probably be credentialing at wherever he finds a job. I feel like HR and hiring depts are notoriously slow and incompetent...

I did Live Scan. I turned one of my vacation weeks during a fellowship as a perfect time to enjoy some sun and find a Live Scan place (and do a job interview). Recently I applied for another license in a state the required fingerprint cards. it was a bit of a hassle but I just called the local police station, made an appt, and went and did it. It was funny because I was a black guy joking about being fingerprinted in a police station for a GOOD reason. Female police got a kick out of it lol.

My application for a CA license took 7 months after it was complete. I was a CA3 with no malpractice history or other flags. There were some state budget problems and mandatory furloughs at the time, but the person who answered phones at the CA medical board actually said that the delay was because they were prioritizing applications from new in-state CA graduates. Things may be different now.

Perhaps. I think the key thing with nay application is to have all your paperwork lined up and ready to go. Have everything organized and saved on your computer. Oh and harass the offices by calling every few weeks to ensure they are at least processing your stuff.

I did live scan on vacation while visiting home and still used my out-of-state address. Took 6 weeks from the time they got everything to getting my license. Of course it took 3 months for them to get everything (multiple errors by my program in confirming I had completed internship which takes weeks to be notified about and more weeks to correct). And they requested that I send in my original med school diploma to verify and that they would mail it back. Of course they didn't, and after I inquired about where it was, they said it was probably sent to the shredder after my license was approved. 😡
