Is it true that PharmD schools in CA are majority (I've heard as high as 50%) Asians? That's amazing.....here in TX, it's more like 25-30%. Seems like ya'll are the majority 😉

On the other hand, how's the job market in CA? Any trouble finding positions? What's the average starting?

Yeah, California in general has the highest population of Asians in America, other than Hawaii. Actually its rather odd sometimes when I go outside of California, or even places like Fresno and realise again that I'm a minority.

Job market is decent, good in places people don't want to work in, bad in places where people do want to work in like SF.

Starting salary is probably 80-100,000

I don't know why some people make such a big deal out of there being this many asians in whatever school. That's just how it is in CA. If one lives in CA it'd be better for them to not have a problem with it because there's so many people from different cultures here, asians, mexicans, etc. I heard all the stuff from my friend when I started college about how its going to be nothing but asians at my school (it was around 65%), and I just thought to myself that their comments sounded stupid. In my suite freshman year there were 2 caucasians (1 myself), 5 asains, 1 egyptian, and 1 Indian. And we were all great friends throughout college and ended up living together throghout. Now, Txpharmstud, i'm not saying you look at it negatively, or that your comment was negative, but when people bring it up, it's like why make such a big deal out of it? I think if you have an open minded mentality it's much more beneficial. However, in experiences I've had, It seems like people from the south find this more difficult.

I agree with your post...it's so diverse out here in Cali one don't really see the race-factor as much as the personality and maturity of the people you deal with. I've just grown to really appreciate this environment :luck: . In my study group we pretty much have one person representing each race from Egyptian, Mexican, Asian, White and Black 😀 .

yeah, there are alot of asians, me being one of them but also think california itself is just a very liberal state in every sense. we are very accepting of all cultures, sexual orientations, political views, religions, etc. i think if one lives in california, they will realize how diverse it really is. i mean i can go outside and get practically any food from persian to morracan to french, greek or mexican. its also one of those rare states that has beaches, deserts, mountains, bays, islands.. all sorts of cool stuff. ! i love california and also i feel very at home because there are so many asians too. there are so many people i can relate to on a more personal level who have similar views as i do. maybe its just that asians are smart and want to go into pharmacy because they see such opportunities arising for this career. =)

Like 50-60% are Asians?

I think Western had something like 79% female. Which seems like a ton from a male POV.

I am not asian. But honestly the asian pharms that i've seen work are amazing. the speed at which they work is remarkable.

I think the UC system is majority Asian. I know at UCLA, UCI, Berkeley, and San Diego... whites are outnumbered around 3:1 by everyone else.

I dunno...I got used to it. I know UCI is something over 50-55% Asian.

Sad thing there was like...at most one african american in my classes, if at all. My lectures were 400-500 large.

Stop asking these racial questions. Can't you be more adaptable? Grow up.

I can't believe people even answer his question. You're supporting his efforts to typecast people by their ethnicities and not their accomplishments.

I think it's a fair question...why do people freak out when this or that person asks how many asians/blacks/whites/mexicans are at a particular school?

I know an African guy going to UCSF, he's over 6' and towers over all his classmates, lol. He put it closer to 70% Asians there, and yes, mostly women.

cali is like 12% asian, so 50%+ is kinda high. but of course asian parents want their children to go into the medical field, so there are lots.

its really sad... a lot of the asian people I know are doing it for money, title, parents, etc. I think that is a bit more prevelent for M.D. then it is for pharmD. I don't find many asian parents stressing their sons to do pharmacy or optometry (can't really say for asian females), but doctor or dentist I do find a lot more.

anyone try out for the WBA ?? or guys for NBA...?? NFL? or UFC?

i swear all my pharmacists are viet

It really doesn't matter what your ethnicity is. What matters is what you decide to achieve while you're in your respective institution. My ethnicity (despite being a minority where I am) plays no role on my current achievements at my SOP; it does not negatively or positively impact me in any way. While it is a part of my identity, it has no relevance on what I can or cannot do.

My opinion on the whole california asian majority thing is that it negatively impacts the growth of those individuals who have grown up sheltered in such an environment. I have classmates in my SOP now who are not used to meeting other ethnicities, and they're having to break out for the very first time. Diversity is absolutely essential in our profession =)

Honestly... i personally dislike that someone would make ethnicity a topic for group discussion.

I understand that it might just be a harmless question, but at the end of the day, WHO CARES WHAT RACE someone is. As long as you are devoted to your profession and are a good person, y does it really matter?

I was born in a country, where race defined who I could associate with. My experience was not cool. The great thing about America is its diversity. EMBRACE it. You never know what you may learn. The great thing about college is that it allows ppl to step outside their realm of "normal". Its a great opportunity to network while learning.

As long as a person is at pharmacy school for the right reasons (helping the community yadda yadda) who gives a "BEEP" what race they are.

Sorry for venting... i was a bit annoyed by the topic of this thread

Ignoring race is like ignoring the giant elephant in your house full of glass figures.

I mean...there's a reason why CRENO/CRECNO failed in the last california general election, no way in hell are we ready for a full on color blind society.

Racism exists, as such, ways to monitor racism must also exist which themselves must also differentiate by race.

Also, people brought up in our society are generally tolerant, accepting, and not racist....BUT, people associate in ways that also HAPPEN to have racial overtones. When my mom hung out with her old classmates from college in her home country when I was a kid, I played with all their sons and daughters...guess what, we were all asian and hung out later in high school.

And like i said before, it's always tough breaking out of your comfort zone...no matter who you are.

GUESS WHAT YOU JUST DID...you've brought up something i have been trying to point out all along, but got ; the type of students they've accepted in pharmacy school... everyone make a mistake, even the administrative

yes its asian central now shut up b4 they stop accepting asians into the program

🙂

i have to add that even though america supposely should embrace divesity and culture, there are still a ton of people that stick to their own race. at school, you see a vast majority of asians hanging with the asians, white with white, etc. People are in the mentality that birds of a feather flock together. Even though I am open to other races and love people and have acquaintences from all background, my closest friends are still asian, not by choice, but by nature. Freindship is a mutual thing and I find it easier/faster for me to become friends with my fellow asians because they are more accepting of me than other races. ie, others don't take the initiative of becoming friends. Its sad but there are a lot of people out there that needs to grow up and look past the culture difference still.

first it was the nail and hair shops. Now it's pharmacies. The Asian Invasion!!!😱
