I was interested in the SF programs. Can anyone comment on how competitive they are? I am an at an american school. Are they very score focused? (Step1 /2)?
I am interested in doing a fellowship. I noticed there are a good number of the kaiser programs which are community but univ. affiliated. Do you think this will hurt chances of doing a fellowship?
The kaiser programs look really good, but I have not heard too much about them. if you can share some info i would appreciate it.
thanks!

The impression I got is that fellowships are hard to get coming from a Kaiser program with perhaps the exception of Kaiser SF, but even that would take more work than at a university program. UCSF is very competitive but has excellent fellowship placement. So does Stanford but that's not SF.

I interviewed at Kaiser Santa Clara and will interview at Kaiser SF. I don't think it's super competitive to get an interview. Kaiser Santa Clara is an amazing program with the best average number of cases per resident that I've seen in the 11 programs I am interviewing at. The residents are all very happy and supportive of each other, and to show how happy they are, they passed around a scrapbook/photo album at our interview day with photos of them traveling to Aruba and Hawaii together, and they also find time to go to Giants games and have a "gourmet club", which is basically a potluck social event that they have periodically. As far as fellowship placement, they had a resident match in REI at UC Irvine last year, and this year one of their residents is applying for gyn onc fellowship. The majority of residents go into general practice, but it's not impossible to do fellowship, particularly if you want to stay on the west coast where most of the programs know how good the bay area Kaisers are. The advice I've gotten is that if you know (or think) you want to do fellowship, and you go to one of the Kaiser programs, just make sure you do some research during residency (there are certainly opportunities for it from what I saw).
