1) The best $400 a Cadillac CTS, BMW, Mercedes or luxury sportscar will ever spend.

2) The joy of these cars isn't screaming along the freeway at 90 mph ... it's the turns, the acceleration, the feel of the car. The most fun I have in my car is under 50 mph.

3) If you don't get it, you don't get it. Enjoy your practical, sensible car. That's OK. 🙂

The Valentine one repeatedly wins "Car and drivers" annual test of radar detectors. Unfortunately it is lacking a regularly updated GPS data base of a rapidly emerging threat Speed Cameras.

Well, there are places where radar isn't used much (California) and where detectors are illegal (Virginia, DC). I still don't see much use for a detector if you speed in moderation and pay attention to what's going on around you.

Could you give some examples of how paying attention to your surroundings while driving allows you to avoid getting pulled?

FYI: I'm honestly curious, but as someone who partially believes what you're saying, and doesn't have a radar detector, I wholeheartedly believe a radar detector > situational awareness on the road.

Just anecdotal evidence here, but I find that cops in detector-illegal areas tend to be, well, lazy about their radar guns and just leave them on all the time. In Virginia, I get a couple miles warning. In Maryland or North Carolina, the police seem to do the off/on thing more often, and occasionally I'll pop over a hill and see one before the detector goes off. That never ever happens in Virginia.

I'm moving to California this summer. I hear their favored revenue-enhancing device is laser, so I'll see how it goes there.

Sure. When I'm driving on the freeway, I'm always scanning both to the front and rear as far as I can see. If I see a Crown Vic, Impala, or Charger behind me anywhere, I stay at the speed limit until I can make sure it's not a cop. Same goes for cars ahead of me. I'm also watching for accidents or stopped cars or other hazards, as well as upcoming onramps where people could be getting on the freeway. When I'm driving, I pay attention to the road and I know my surroundings, and I'm almost never surprised by cops.

When I lived in California, the CHP didn't use radar or laser much at all, mostly just pacing cars directly. All a radar detector would do there is give you a false sense of security.

I normally go about 10-15 over the limit on the freeway if there is light traffic and clear weather, and I haven't been pulled over in years. I'm not saying I never will be again, but I really think situational awareness is the key here. I also think that if you don't notice cop cars then you're probably not paying enough attention to be safely speeding anyway.

I prefer a sickle,
had one since I was six.

Re. American made cars,
I own a Crown Vic...........and a toyota or two.

What displeases me with Cad / Vic is the lack of attention to detail,
some of the trim lines, body lines don't line up evenly.......Where on European vehicles it's a mandatory compliance.
That being said, I like the larger vehicles, my rear passengers sit in another time zone. Not to mention the trunk space is large enough for a wheel chair and the person in it.
Well.....I had no issues buying a Toyota
It was made in America.........fed some domestic mouths,

Nope....but I should have.

Back in my residency days I had a black circa 1994 Firebird Formula. I moonlighted at Huey P Long's ER three weekends outta four, about a three-something hour drive from New Orleans.

The Friday before my moonlighting weekend I'd finish up residency stuff at Tulane sometime in the afternoon/evening, stop at home to get some clothes and head to my moonlighting gig.

Along I-10 theres a stretch across the Atchafalaya Basin....a bridge thats...I dunno....20 miles long?

I'd usually hit it at night and never saw any cops on that stretch so as I got more confident (uhhhh....cocky) my speeds increased over that stretch; near the end I'd throttle down in case a Super Trooper was sitting at the end which they sometimes did.

Got to the point where as soon as I hit that bridge I'd bring the Pontiac up to a little over 100mph and.....uhhhh.....put it on cruise control.:laugh:

I swear I did that for almost two years.

Then one night peering ahead at the upcoming Atchafalaya bridge, maybe a cuppla miles onto it, I saw blue lights.😱

A trooper had stopped someone on my coveted raceway!

That blew my confidence and never approached 100mph again.

It was fun while it lasted.

Usta always drive with a fuzz buster though since it was all highway miles and IMHO thats where those gadgets really work....where theres miles and miles of flat highway ahead of you.

Still have to slow down around overpasses for the clandestine trooper or county-mounty using the overpass to block your radar signal.

Actually it was a rental car. I was on my way to an interview in Boulder and my wife was asleep in the passenger seat. Cop was coming over a hill and I was coming over another hill with a valley b/w us. I saw him and hit the brakes hard enough to wake my wife up. Cop pulls me over and asks me where I'm headed. He was real nice and took my La. license back to his car. He returned almost 20 minutes later and I thought I was in real trouble. :scared: He asked me to pull up my sleeves which I did. He then said "sorry to keep you so long but there is a warrant out for someone with your same name but has tattoos up both arms." He then dropped the ticket speed down to 95 mph. 😀
 
I bought my CTS brand new in 2004 and here is why I bought it:

1. Budget was ~30K, that limited me to a 3-series, Lexus IS, G35, C-class

a. 3-Series: the 335 did not exist in 2004 and most of the non-//M beemers were gutless. Oh and speak of the interior quality, ever heard of leatherette?

b. Lexus IS 300: nice interior, solid I-6, kinda girly, not enough hp

c. G35 sedan: great car, came with ~275hp, but reminded me of a RWD Altima

d. C-class: never considered it until the new body style came out 5yrs later

My CTS had 255hp, RWD, full leather interior, dual exhaust, sunroof...
It stickered for $38K, but I drove it home for $29.5K (Brand New, 14miles). American cars are great values, you just need to work them down from MSRP.

Also, I've had the car for 5yrs and the dealer service was great, and its never had any issues 50K miles later.

I know exactly the bridge you are referring to although I only went 90-100mph on it a couple of times. I'm curious to know how the cop managed to pull the guy over in that 2 lane bridge? Was the dude just not paying attention and pulled past the cop in the other lane? Otherwise there is no where for the cop to hide.

There are 2 on-off ramps there as well. The Whiskey Bay and the Atchafalaya River. I've seen them sit on these spots as well.

Got pulled today over by the state patrol for excessive tint on my windows. I bought the car used and never noticed the tint on the front side windows which is hardly noticeable. Smokey was packing a $500 toy to measure the percent tint on windows and was furiously working the last day of the month to meet his ticket quota. The state trooper refused to give me a warning. Now I have to get the tinting taken off my windows or get a doctor's note saying that I am sensitive to sunlight. Next time Smokey promised to extort $500 from me and impound my car.

Jetprops ride looks like it might not pass, the test, but some states still let you tint your windows.
