Financial Aid
The State University Grant (SUG) program provides need-based awards to eligible undergraduate and graduate/postbaccalaureate students who are California residents or otherwise determined as eligible (i.e. Dream). Systemwide, the priority is to award a SUG at least equal to the amount of the State University Fee ($7,356 for graduate and postbaccalaureate students for 2012-2013) to eligible students who apply for financial by March 2, who have an expected family contribution (EFC) of $4,000 or less, and who are not receiving a Cal Grant or other award designated to cover fees. Each campus has established local awarding policies and priorities for these funds.

Still waiting on long beach. Fullerton had a welcome day and three out of the four workshops were in spanish so our families could understand. As a hispanic, I loved the inclusion of our families.

I got an admission letter from CSULB this morning! I don't know much about how good the Cal State programs are. I know Long Beach is ranked kind of low (according to US News). Does anyone know the pros/cons of CSU's? I'm still waiting to hear back from CSUSB and SDSU. If I plan on settling in California post-MPH, is it better I choose a school in California (as opposed to east coast)?

The main pro is the cost, I think.

I really liked SFSU's program for Health Education (ultimately decided against it since I got into UCLA). The bay area is a great place for community health; SFSU's program really integrates with the community and is very social justice-oriented. I also liked that their cohort was small/intimate. They structure classes it so that it's convenient for working students and, from what I've heard, the teachers actually coordinate with each other so you don't have a bunch of tests at the same time!

I was also considering SDSU; their program is #30 for US News' ranking.

I think choosing a school in the area you plan to work is a great strategy. It helps you to build a reputation in the area and hopefully make connections with future employers. However, that doesn't mean you can't get a job if you work elsewhere. Look at what the school's career services have to offer and how extensive their alumni network is. Going back to SFSU, they were upfront about the fact that they didn't have much of a network in LA (where I want to work after graduation). Another option is to do your practicum in the location you plan to work.

What discipline are you looking into?

As the poster above mentioned, it is smart to go where you want to work afterward. Networking through the professional associations in the area is valuable, and your school may have strong connections with the employers there. Congratulations on your acceptance by the way! Oh, and I don't know if it's important to you, but CSULB doesn't have a school of public health.

Well a main pro is that they tend to have small cohorts. I've talked to people who have graduated from MPH programs at cal states and they had no problems doing research and that the professors were really involved. The advisor does not have a large amount of students, around 20, so they ask about your career goals and ultimately plan your courses/internships based on your ultimate career goals.
One negative is they don't have as much funding and are not as recognized and you can not get a PHD (except for SD)

I would not consider CSUSB because they are not CEPH accredited yet. Most jobs in california require you graduate from a CEPH accredited school/program.

Long beach is not ranked because it is a program not a school. Overall its a top tier CSU.

Congrats! on Long beach, haha now i'm wondering if I was rejected. Did you get it electronically or snail mail? MPH or MHA?

I chose programs in Socal due to the fact that I plan on working in Socal and the programs have academic internships at companies I want to work at.

When deciding for programs look at their course catalog to determine what courses you are most interested in and of course look at faculty cv's to see if their research interests align with yours.
