Hello

This is my first time posting on these boards but I have reading multiple threads that have been posted on here. I am entering my third year at california state university fullerton and I just finished reading a post about the chances of calstate students getting accepted into med school and it did not sound very good. I have read posts by multiple posters here that sound like they know much about how to increase the chances to get accepted into medschool. I have a 3.48 GPA ( I know not very good) but i am determined to study much harder and be much more focused and increase my GPA. I have aced all of my bio courses but got a B+ on my first gchem course. Now my question is, is it advisable to transfer to a UC or should I just stay in the calstate that I am currently in and work hard to boost my GPA and get a good mcat score. Also is it better to shadow a doctor or volunteer at a hospital or to do both at the same time. Thank you in advance for the advice.

If you can transfer, it would be advised. If your not convinced, frolic yourself to your nearest medical school, UCI? Talk to their dean of admissions. This person is going to lie to you and say that they consider applicants from everywhere, which more a less maybe true depending on what level of consideration he/she may be referring to. Then, find a way to talk to the students or get yourself the list of matriculated students and their respective alumni connection. You will find that cal states are heavily underrepresented. I've talked to the dean of admissions from USC, and they said that they consider cal state students. Guess how many cal state students got in last year (or last last year-I forgot)? One. It so happens that this one person was a transfer student from USC to CSULB, due to financial reasons for there last year.

Not saying it can't be done. There are a number of students on this board that are goign to argue with me. But they can't argue the fact that you are fighting the current. And they can't argue that it would have probably been much easier for them in terms of number of acceptances, if they had transferred to a UC or private school.

This is coming from a recent Cal State graduate, so take it for what its worth:

Can you get into med school from a Cal State?
- Yes. There are quite a few examples of this (myself included) floating around this message board.

Can you get into a top tier med school / UC from a Cal State?
- Possibly, but this will be an uphill battle. In my eyes, you'd really need an ace up your sleeve.

How many other Cal State applicants did I meet on my interview trail?
- Zero. None. Of my five interviews, not one Cal State. Plenty of UCs however.

How many UC interviews did I get?
- Zero. (Again, totally anecdotal, my application certainly has its issues).

How many students at my school were admitted to medical school this year?
- Two I know of, myself and another good student (who happened to be a URM).

Was me going to a State School a death wish for my career?
- Absolutely not, I really felt I got an amazing education.

Do I feel that going to a Cal state school was detrimental to my admissions cycle?
- Yes. Certainly.

If I were in your exact position, I would absolutely consider transferring to a UC. Why interview Cal State students with the SLEW of UC students applying to medical schools.
