So I'm a Cali resident, but went to the midwest for undergrad (good school). My stats are average, but ECs good (did a year of service work last year in DC and am now working in a hospital in South America)... money is a big issue (undergrad loans, volunteer work and latin american income dont make for the big bucks) and have no interest in applying to 30 schools, many of which i would not be happy going to anyway. im looking for some advice on which out of state schools to apply to in addition to the cali schools (also is there any point in applying to a stanford or ucsf if i dont have excellent stats?? i know its all a crap shoot but i dont want to throw away money either). I am also looking more for urban settings as opposed to schools in the middle of nowhere, with not much outside activities (im not naive enough to think that i will have tons of free time, but i also find it necessary to go party when need be or have other stuff to do outside of studying)... also does anyone have thoughts, experience with MD/MPH programs?? any advice would be appreciated as i might be moving to another south american country for a month of two in april to do some service work (im random i know) and want to get my **** figured out before then.

If you want to apply to UCSF and Stanford go ahead. It costs maybe 100 bucks per school if you're lucky enough to get the secondary.

Try The University of Louisville....I'm there now...a few from Cali in my class.

I'm a Cali re-applicant so I have a few suggestions on Cal-friendly out of state schools that you might want to look into. I'll just list them off for you:

Drexel
Rosalind Franklin
New York Medical College (nicknamed UC Valhalla, haha)
Albany Medical College
Boston University
St. Louis

If you have any more questions feel free to PM me.

I'll second that SLU is definetely CA friendly.

Another school to add that is pretty good to CA people is the Medical College of Ohio.

I think about 20% of Albert Einstein's student body is from Cali. Also a great school if you are public health/underserved focused.

as for you second question, i did my MPH before applying to medical school and am soooo glad i did not do a combined program. public health is just such an amazing field, which incorporates so many different disciplines, that i think you would be selling yourself short by doing it in 1 year rather than 2. i did a 2 year program and still dont feel like i have learned everything i want to know about public health. you can always go back to do your MPH as a physician, many of the schools have part time programs. just my $0.02.

osu and northwestern seem to have a lot of cali people.
