Cali students screwed

Those 10 students from Utah that Creighton accepts sure is a big help to the other 500 dental applicants from Utah.
Not much fact in what you're saying. If you look at it from an applicant:seat ratio, California probably has a fairly good thing going. Of course, a ratio such as that doesn't do much because students apply to schools all over the country.
If you consider the other schools that participate in WICHE then it is not as bad as it appears considering that there are 500 applicants. Where did you get your stats that there are 500 dental applicants from Utah? Considering that there are around 3000 applicants a year that approximates to about 17% of the total applicants coming from a state with a population ranking of 34.
There are way more than 3000 applicants per year. Hell, in 2004 there were over 9000 and the number has been going up ever since.

Definitely agree. There were 813 students alone from Texas that applied to Texas schools for the class of 2010. There is no way there were only 2200 more applicants to fill spots in 50+ other schools.

First things first, Gavin couldn't be more correct. BYU alone put out ~350 applicants last year. Then consider the other five major feeder universities in Utah and 500 seems about right. I know this thread is supposed to be about how unfortunate it is to live in Cali. But there is no way that a state with 5 dental schools will get any sympathy from a state like Utah. And there was at least 12,000 app sent out last spring, and that number grew to about 14,000 by the fall.
I fully agree with almost every previous post: get the scores, apply early, have the right mentality, and most of all don't go beggin' for sympathy when you have all that you do in your own backyard. It usually rubs most people the wrong way.

Good post. Dental school is hard for everyone to get into (unless your dad has bought your seat as LLU or USC). Everybody feel the same way you do. Just do your best, give money to charity, and hope the gods like you enough to bless you with the opportunity to become a dentist. 😀
Seeing that the entrance requirements for dental schools have dramatically increased in the past 5-7 years or so, I find the comment of decreasing quality of education a little odd. I would venture to guess that the overall quality of most dentists graduating now is probably as good as it has ever been.
I don't know how old your specialists, etc were that you talked to, but it seemed to me that a lot of the dentists I talked to that had graduated a while ago had opinions of schools very different from those of recent gradutes (ppl who grad in the past 7 or so years). I think maybe they get out of touch with the school system and so their opinions might be old, or they don't like these young dentists who come around with all their crazy new ideas and methods.
I've only been in school 2 weeks but I've already learned so much about patient care, new materials and treatments that my dentist doesn't do or use. I can see why he would think students from this school weren't very good (which is what he told me) since the way I treat patients is going to be so different from him.
