Hi guys! So, I am a current pre-med junior getting ready for the upcoming app cycle. I was wondering, how unlikely is it to get into a DO program in California? Do they favor in-state students like the MD programs usually do? I haven't taken the mcat yet (t-minus 24 days yikes) but I have ~3.6 sGPA and 3.7 cumulative. I would say I am solid on EC, have shadowed DOs, and am first generation (not URM). I'm originally from Illinois but I go to school in Ohio. Any input would be helpful, thanks!!

What's your GPA? I think you must had typo 5.6/5.7 for gpa.

Depends on your MCAT.

Traditionally, the California DO schools - like their MD counterparts - have higher matriculant stats than most other DO schools.

Last I looked, TouroCA was around a 3.6 and 510.

Just saying. If you have a 3.6/510, you go OOS in CA.

Huh. I swear I remember reading 3.6/510 somewhere. Maybe I'm thinking of accepted stats instead of matriculant.

Thanks for the correction.

No worries, it just didn't sound right. Though their stats are better than my state MD, which says something.

They must have changed/edited it - I remember that too. It seemed a little strange at the time because then their next class went down to a 507/508.

If you are an Ohio resident, focus on getting into med school in Ohio. Your GPA is probably good enough for Toledo, Neocom, Wright State, Ohio U (DO) and perhaps Cincinnati. All of these medical schools are better and cheaper, for an Ohio resident, than the DO schools in California. Furthermore, you don't want to practice medicine in California. In California the cost of living is high, taxes are obscene and physician pay is lousy. Good luck on the MCAT.

Californian DO schools don't sound worth it. Touro CA's curriculum makes it difficult to prepare for the Step exams. Western has lost one of its major teaching hospitals to a new MD school. There are ways to get to Cali from other schools for residency.

I am a resident of Illinois and they only have Midwestern as their DO school so that's why I am trying to compile a list of other schools to add to that! I am going to try for Wright State and Toledo (MD wise) and OU DO wise as I have shadowed a DO who is an area director for the school in Dayton.
