Any Students in California being affected by how screwed up our education is being affected with all these cuts/fee increases etc?

Classes are being so difficult to add, there are just not enough for all the students. Some students are taking some of the pre-req classes at CCs because classes at the Universities are simply full or not enough of them. Will this be seen as an issue when it comes to apply? I mean, taking Bio 2 at X University and then Chem 1 at a CC or any of the pre-reqs?

Some students are doing these to be able to finish and apply on time, otherwise we are out of luck.

Not sure if this is going on in any other states.. What are your thoughts?

Yeah, but luckily being a senior...I get first priority to add classes. It definitely sucks though for the rest of you guys. Honestly, I'd be very frustrated if I was just starting pre-med as a freshman and was delayed an entire year b/c the pre req courses filled up before I even had a chance to take it.

I think taking pre-reqs at a CC, under this special circumstance will not be frowned upon b/c the acceptance committee is fully aware of the current situation. However, you'd definitely need to make A's everywhere you go. Wait, you have to make A's no matter where you go anyways? So it's the same thing!

I know at my school they are going to videocast the Genetics class to 2 more lecture halls of students in addition to the one with the professor.

My CSU is being hit rather hard:

-Summer Classes cancelled last year and next year
-All teachers have furlough days (~7 non-teaching / non-class days) w/ 10% pay cut
-Staff furlough (~10 days of no administrators on campus, usually Fridays)
-Removal of college of science research credit classes
-Cuts to overall chemistry, micro and bio courses offered
-Removal of all kinesiology athletic courses (jogging, golf, tennis)
-Removal of double major (incoming next year)
-Removal of minoring (incoming next year)
-Reducing / Removal of Major switching (incoming next year)
-The overall CSU system is expected to take in 40,000 less students this next year than last year, which was already reduced.

Do yourself a favor, get to a UC, go private or have some serious CC credits under your belt before going to a CSU (getting into classes for those with little credits is a nightmare).

I also attend a CSU and its ridiculous. My brother goes to a UC and they are having so many issues as well... What CSU do you attend?

Well, I'm not in Cali, but I believe Washington is the second for highest tuition hikes.

Anyways, it sucks. I can't get into a lot of the classes I want. Who knows about my financial aid for next year as well.

40000? Is that number right? That just seems like way too big since the college I go to (biggest in state) only have about 40000 students?

Good luck getting in. CC enrollment is up an incredible amount, and they are obviously being hit as well.

Yeah, its pretty crazy and frustrating..

I'm starting to get this thread and the other cc thread confused.

But yea, it sucks. The other thing that is frustrating is that UW's president is the highest payed in the country I believe, yet they are cutting everything. Makes you wonder if his salary is going to be cut; my guess is no.

daaam. it sounds terrible for you guys. for real.

all institutions are getting hit, private included, but not like this.

Oh our poor state is going to poop 🙁

Edit: I'm trying to change my state residency 😛 Forget CA

There were two things that upset me the most:

1. I didn't get all the classes that I wanted..

2. Just checked my BAR account a couple of days ago, and I had to pay 500 dollars more for my next quarter 🙁

Luckily i am graduating in two weeks, so i dont have to pay the fee hikes next quarter. (unless i go to a UC for med school...)

it's interesting last week when the UC regents were meeting to discuss the hikes it was interesting to compare the reactions of students in my science classes compared to my non-science classes. The science students felt that it was wrong but weren't doing anything about it. On the other hand the humanities students felt it was wrong and were discussing ways to change it. Did any of you get the same feel?

I'm at Cal Poly Pomona, near LA. I'm very excited to nearly be done with my studies, but my heart really goes out to incoming Freshman / Transfers.

Humanity majors = infantry

Science majors = General

The general uses his mind to create the tactics so the infantry can do the physical work.

BTW, I'm a humanities major lol.
