Calling all Gators....UF Class of 2006!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Doctora Foxy - I am so glad that you found a biochem class! It would have been horrible to defer for a year after all that work - or not go to you first choice.

I think for the first day of orientation I will wear a suit - mostly likely with a skirt but maybe pants. If the guys have to wear a tie then I think we should be in a suit - like at interviews - what are you thinking of wearing?

I have not even thought of my code of ethics stuff yet - it is not due until August 1st. Have you checked out the web site they suggested looking at?

Good luck in your move to NY!

I did check that ethics website for UF last week, but nothing was up yet.

For orientation, I was also thinking of wearing a suit....but instead of my interview suit, I might go pick up a cuter one with a shorter skirt, cuz my other one was a little past my knees. 😉 I'm shootin' for an almost Ally McBeal style 😉 hehe, no adcoms to impress anymore! But it'll be nice, nice too short. 😛

I'm excited to go to NY....who knows when I'll have time in the future to visit my relatives? And those grandmas know how to cook! 😀 😉

ok katnole, i got a cute orientation suit at burdine's today....black jacket and a short-ish matching skirt...I'll just wear a camisole underneath...i'm also thinking of wearing sandals and no hose----is that ok? I mean, it's gonna be a bazillion degrees!

When is everyone moving in? I won't be able to get there until August 13th (b/c of the biochem class), so I'll have a lot to do to get settled in that day! I hope I won't miss too much pre-orientation partying! 😉

Doctora Foxy - I am glad you found another suit to wear. I might just have to go shopping for a more comfortable outfit too - thanks for the good excuse to buy more clothes. I am definetly not wearing hose and was thinking of wearing sandals too - it will be so hot - and I think we are supposed to look nice for the picture and no one will be able to see bare legs in the picture. It is so nice to not have to impress the committee!!! If I change my mind I will let you know! And maybe let me know what you decided - I don't want either of us to be the only ones without hose.
I am moving in on the 10th - I want to be settled by the time classes start.....one month from today!! Can you believe it??!! I can not wait!

I got my big sib contact info in the mail the other day, so I emailed him to find out if I needed to buy the old tests or if he still had them to give to me . . . My email got returned to me and it said he was above his mailbox quota😕 I guess he isn't checking his email much over the summer. So, should I just go ahead and buy all of those exams? I know there is a deadline to order them and I don't want to get stuck without them. I definitely don't want to be spending forever photocopying things in the library near exam time.

buddy--did they give a phone number? I'm calling my big sib tomorrow....why don't you PM me his contact info or name and I'll ask my big sib what's up with him. 🙂

p.s. what's with the 3 star rating of this thread? 🙁 I want 5 stars cuz this is my favorite one! 😀 Vote people! 😉

bump from page 6

I got my big sib info in the mail and the scavenger hunt card...it should be fun! 😀 I'm so excited, I wish this month would be over already!

can y'all explain the UF ethics thing? What are the requirements, etc?

Thanks for the link Buddy! It looks kinda like what I expected. I'm just gonna hand in a few lines and not worry about it.

They didn't really give any instructions--just to write down a few bullet points for our class code of ethics. That's why we've been waiting for that site to go up! 😉 Now we have some examples to go by. 🙂

I'll be living across the street from Shands...do you guys think I'll have to buy a parking decal to park on the UF campus?

Do we get free access to UF's gym? I'm not sure how it works yet....so do people drive to the gym, or is it easier to avoid parking probs and take that little bus?

that's cool..so, everyone gets to add a few points, and the points put together make the whole code? hope that there arent any conflictions! =X

I got the gubernaculum today and now I'm scared 😱

but there is a lot of helpful info in there....

hey guys!
just wanted to say a quick hi to some of my future clasmates. i too am getting so excited about starting up and meeting all of you. by the way, if any of you are in g-ville, i highly recommmend going to the happy hour this friday that the 2nd years are hosting. i went to one at the beginning of the summer and had a blast. talking with the 2nd years was a great way to get the scoop about first year and about the infamous scavenger hunt. . .can't wait!
see you all soon!

hi kdk6! 🙂

I'm just posting to say goodbye for a few days until I find some sort of internet service....I'm going to NY tomorrow to take the biochem class for UF.

Wish me luck! 😀

ciao,

Foxy

see you guys in a few weeks!

You definitely do NOT need a parking decal if you live at Country Gardens/Williamsburg/Summit House, and all students get free access to the excellent student gyms on campus.

Good luck in NY DF! It will all be worth it, trust me.

Thanks Sabreman! 🙂

NY is good so far--today was the first day of class, and the prof was really nice about me leaving early for orientation--she's giving me a take-home exam! woo-hoo! 😀

see you guys soon!

and the scavenger hunt sounds awesome! (but no designated driver here 😉)

Ok, I keep hearing about this scavenger hunt, but since I was accepted to UF just 10 days ago, I have no clue what you all are referring to. Can anyone clue me in?

The scavenger hunt is lots of fun. They divide all the new students into groups of 10 or so, and they give you a sheet of questions you need to answer. You get the answers from second year students who are strategically placed at bars all over downtown Gainesville. To get them to give you the answers, you must perform tasks... usually doing something embarrassing and silly such as sing a song/rap, build a human pyramid, wheelbarrow races through the center of the crowded bar, etc. Drinks for the second years are always appreciated and will get you many answers, but are not required.

There are also a few extra tasks which determine the winner, which is to solve clues leading to the whereabouts of certain traditional items hidden somewhere downtown. Whosoever discovers these treasures will win the scavenger hunt and go down in history... and be captured in embarrasing photos that will be shown on graduation day ;-)

i just got all my info from uf, but there wasn't anything included about the scavenger hunt or drinks with 2nd years. will i get this later or did you all find out by word of mouth or what?

One or two weeks ago, I got a letter in the mail telling me who my big sib is. A small sheet of paper was included with the letter that mentioned the scavenger hunt. I got an email with more info about the scavenger hunt a few days ago.

Hi guys! Sorry I've been out!

The scavenger hunt is put on every year by the new 2nd years (that's me!) for the incoming 1st years (that's YOU! 🙂) We take you to downtown G'Ville, break you up into random groups of about 10 and then make you do absolutely ridiculous things for clues as you hop from bar to bar (no, you do NOT have to drink if you don't want to...but it's a whole lot more fun if you do!). The first team to get all the clues "wins" and gets some really, really cool prizes. Last year, after the hunt was over, we had an entire club that was rented out just to us and had free drinks until closing. It's a really good time so make sure you attend! If you're a non-drinker we can certainly use you for a designated driver (each group must have one), so let your big sib know as soon as you get your scavenger hunt invite.

Congrats to all and if anyone has any questions about anything, feel free to email me!

See ya next month!
Cobra

Congrats leila!

At first I wasn't sure you were the same leila as before, but I just read your other thread and I can't believe it!!!!!

If you want a copy of the email for the scavenger hunt (or if anyone else does), just PM me your email address and I'll forward you whatever you want. 🙂

p.s. this biochem class is a joke!.....looks like I'll definitely pass and be at UF August 14th 🙂

thanks for the info everyone! foxy, i pm'd you my email address. also i just wanted to vent that apparently everyone's moving to florida but nobody's leaving, because it costs over twice as much to rent a uhaul from here to florida as it does to make the reverse trip. 😡

bloomington, indiana 😛

Do any of you know anything about the study packets they sell? My big sib is not too familiar with them, so I was wondering if any of you have heard anything. I was told that most students do use the transcriptions in case any one was wondering. Thanks!

What's up guys! I left for a little while and it looks like our UF Class filled with SDNers! Either that or SDN filled with UF Students. We're taking over! But I guess pretty soon we'll be talking to each other in person and not have too much to write about here. I just wanted to let the new acceptees know that I still have a room to rent in my 3/2 house that I share with another grad student. I'm kind of picky about getting a studious/semi-serious student, so a med student would be perfect. It's fairly close to school so you wouldn't have to worry about parking. If any females are sqeamish about living with guys, we can make arrangements so that you can have your own bathroom. Now that I've finished with my sales pitch, I'd like to say that I'm counting down the days until I meet all of you guys. I'm sure most of you will see me at the scavenger hunt. I will be the guy that does all kinds of crazy stuff, especially towards the end of the night after a few meetings with my good friends Johnnie Walker and Jim Beam (can't help it, I'm Irish, it's genetic). Class of 2006 Rocks!

Instead of waiting until orientation, would any of y'all be interested in getting together for some drinks and get-to-know-you chit-chat, say, the weekend before everything starts? I'm moving up there in two days and wouldn't mind getting some beers and meeting some of you guys a little early. (If only to help me rebuild my waning tolerance, as it's been a couple years since college for me). Not to mention that, if we sort of take a loose constructionist view of the ethics postings so far, it's our ethical duty to get each other drunk as quickly as possible. Comraderie, mutual support, and all.

Doh! I forgot to do my ethics stuff!

I'll be there august 13th, so I'll prolly meet everyone at orientation, unless you'll be living in the ghetto--then I'll be asking you to carry stuff up to my apt for me! 😉

Biochem is going good, only 2 more weeks!

Buddy, what do you mean about transcriptions?

Has anyone joined the AMWA? Maybe I'll wait til orientation to see about that.

Where in g-ville are you all living? I wanted to be in an apartment close enough to walk to class, but by the time I started looking they were all full. So, I'm in Gatorwood apartments, but apparently a bus that stops at the hospital also stops at the apartments. Are those of you too far to walk gonna take the bus, or try and find parking everyday? Or should I just take the bus most of the time, but get a parking decal for late night studying? Tell me what you think!

Dr. Drew- I'm moving in on the 9th, and yeah, it'd be cool to get a group together before orientation starts. Do you have any ideas about the place? It's been a while since I've been in gainesville. 🙂

Dr. Foxy,

The transcriptions are basically class notes for many of the first year classes. The study packets are tips and diagrams etc. for each class; basically things to help you study and retain the info 🙂 Of course, they cost money . . . i think another 100 if you buy all of it. You should have gotten something about it in the mail recently.

Dr. Drew,

I'm not sure when I'll be settled into gville yet. I'm moving on the 7th, but then I have to go back to my hometown. If you organize something, let me know!

I look forward to meeting everyone!

Wow, Gatorwood. That's where I lived when I was in grad school up there.

I was thinking we could all get together Saturday the 10th, though it doesn't really matter--whatever works best for everyone whose interested. As for the place, well, it's been a while since I've been up there too, but I was thinking maybe just someplace like the Swamp or market street.

Moving sucks. I never realized how much crap you could actually fit into a two-bedroom apartment. I'm beginning to wonder whether the 17-foot U-haul will be big enough.

Anyway, let me know how the 10th sounds and we'll figure it out from there.

Gee, are big sibs allowed to come? If anyone's interested, I'd be happy to show up and give you a little heads up on what you're in for! 🙂 If not, have a great time...party as much as you can...Anatomy is just around the corner! 😱

I'll see all of you soon!

Go Gators!

Cobra

Hell yes, cobragirl. More the merrier.

Ms. Foxy--so you won't be here until the 13th? Bummer. If a bunch of us do end up getting together earlier, maybe we can arrange to have you live via satellite or something.

Boxing up the computer here soon, so I won't be checking in for a day or two. I'll leave you all with: Saturday the 10th, 8:00pm, at the Swamp. At least for now. I'll check in later to see if that's changed.

Swamp at 8 sounds good to me! But we should arrange to meet somewhere outside since it will be VERY crowded and we don't know what anyone else looks like! Hey, maybe we could wear name tags with our SDN username... just kidding. Take it easy, only 2 weeks left!

i wanna meet you guys too! But I guess we'll have to have another SDN get together later on. 😉

I was too tired yesterday to do my ethics stuff and I got an email today reminding me to do it. 🙄 I was just gonna type in generic stuff, but then I read my roommate's entry and it was so nice so I want to put some thought into it. 🙂 I guess I'll do it now.....I doubt it will be different from the stuff already up there though .....

I haven't received my financial aid packet yet...isn't that weird?

Also, are any of you using private health insurance? Do you know if the health center on campus accepts beacon?....or is it better to just get UF's insurance? My dad pays the same for all 4 of the kids whether or not I use it, so I might as well just use his coverage and not pay any money---as long as i can go to the doctor in g'ville if i need to.....any thoughts?

I'm using a private insurance company but I don't know anything about beacon or the UF policy . . .

I called today and I'm gonna stick with my private insurance. 🙂

The guy at the health science center told me over the phone that doctor consultations are free for all students...is that true? Sounds good to me!

I also spoke to the FA office, and for people accepted after June 1st, award letters were sent out last week and some this week.

I've done everything except for sending in that stupid amsa form because I don't know if I should order those tests or not.....time to email my big sib cuz it seems hard to reach her by phone.....

I can't wait! 8 more days!! 😀

I only bought 1 of the test packets because my big sib has the rest to lend me. I'd send the order in soon cause they said they turn in the orders in "early august." Oh yeah, those study packets, from what i've heard at least, should be useful and are worth buying.

Foxy always like it long...
These long threads are too much to read in one sitting...

Katnole...are you a seminole at uf?

Peeps at fsu dont even know about sdn...kinda sad...me having to chat with state rivals...

Im actually a UM fan though, so no hate mail.
later gators

I'd just like to publicly say that my roommate ROCKS for setting up the apartment! (no, she doesn't read sdn yet 😉)

I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most of you are probably already there...I hope you guys have fun this weekend! 😀 There should be a lot going on!

Well, I made it--lock, stock, and kitten. The apartment here in Williamsburg is looking very nice, found a gym, got some sun, heading over to St. Augustine for the day tomorrow. So far, so good.

A couple of things:

1. This is very important--are The Simpsons in syndication up here? If so, what time, what channel? Does anyone know? I've noticed early signs of withdrawal, such as me aimlessly wandering around from 6-7, not knowing quite what to do.

2. So what's the verdict on the SDN get-together this Saturday? I've already tied one on at several of the bars up here, as there's not much else to do besides wait. That being said, I'll dutifully be at the Swamp, at 8, this Saturday, unofficially beginning the year for us, unless absolutely no one else can make it.

For those of you who want to go and respond before Saturday--should we all just meet at the door, like joehuf suggested? If that doesn't work, I figure we can spot each other from the eager, unsuspecting looks on our faces (still hasn't dawned on me yet that my life-as-Corona-advertisement will soon end).

3. Dra. Foxy--good luck with finals. Since I'm in Williamsburg, let me know if you need help moving anything in, although sounds like your roommates got it under control. Glad to lend a hand.

Hope everyone is well, and hope to see at least some of you Saturday.

I second the ethics question. What is it? and what is the big sib ya'll keep talking about? Sorry I'm so clueless.

I am packing now to move in on Saturday! I am so excited! Since I am moving Saturday, I most likely will not be able to make it to the Swamp on Sat. night - so drink a beer for me! I am looking forward to meeting everyone at orientation!

BIOTIN - I am going to be a Seminole at UF. It will take some getting used being in the minority. I learned about SDN from someone at FSU but I don't think many people know about it there. The premed advising is the worst there!

Future MD - In one of the packets there was a sheet about how we as a class have to write our own code of ethics. Everyone has to submit several bullet points - nothing too hard. I also got a letter in the mail awhile back with the name of my big sib - just someone in upper class to look out for ya! Don;t worry about feelign clueless..I know hte feeling quite well 🙂

I hope everyone enjoys their last week of freedom! See ya'll soon!

bump

also, does uf not have its white coat ceremony until the beginning of third year? and does anyone know when we'll get our exam schedule? no, i'm not studying yet, but i need to plan some trips!

can't wait to meet you all!

Yeah, that's right--white coat ceremony takes place the summer between second and third year.

Also, I know our schedule has been posted on the UFCOM website. I think the link below should take you to it:

http://www.medinfo.ufl.edu/year1/index.html

On the right hand side is "fall and spring schedule." I'm pretty sure they have quizzes and tests listed on there.

Hope that helps. See you soon.
