Yesterday I went to an interview and for the tour, they made us walk across campus on all kinds of concrete, tar, and asphalt. It ruined my shoes. Is this typical of every tour? The one I had before this only had us walk through the medical building. I can get heel replacements but it's annoying since they make such a big deal about your interview shoes and then make you go on a hike right before you meet everyone.

The extent of the tour depends on the school, but it is not uncommon to see several buildings. If you carry a bag, bring a different pair of shoes. It's completely acceptable to change into more comfortable shoes for the tour!

I have seen many girls wearing flats and such interviews. Most of them cite the fact that a previous interview had them walking up and down hills and whatnot.

Were you walking through wet concrete and on hot tar? If not, those sound like pretty typical walking surfaces for most shoes.

It wasn't a normal sidewalk. It was like old torn up parking lot asphalt with potholes and loose stones. I had normal two-inch heels but the heel parts kept getting stuck in crevices. Looks like a dog chewed on them now.

I would actually discretely change into flats (if possible) before going on tours last year, and they were usually right before lunch so I could discretely put heels back on before interviewing.

I have always worn professional looking flats to my interviews so far, and I don't think wearing heels would have made any difference. Changing shoes would have felt awkward to me, and I was super grateful for comfortable shoes during the long tours.
