How significantly does a failed course impact an applicant's chances of being accepted into an OMFS residency? For instance, consider Applicant A, who has a perfect academic transcript and a CBSE score of 70, compared to Applicant B, who failed one course but has a higher CBSE score of 73. Which applicant is likely to be more favored by admission committees?

If all else being equal (including interpersonal/social skills), Applicant without failed course > Applicant with failed course

One or two internships + passing score on cbse has shown to make up for a failed year.

Thank you for your reply. Do you mean "externship?" Or do you mean the full year internship (non-cat year) after dental school?

if youre not sure how your tone came off as rude you gotta work on those social skills bud
Alright bud. It’s the harsh reality though. If someone struggles to pass classes in dental school, they’ll most likely struggle with the CBSE. It’s much more difficult than any class in dental school. And don’t worry, my social skills are just fine, good enough to get me into my top choice residency program

of course the cbse is way harder than any dental school class, but people can struggle in dental school classes for various reasons.

the guy is clearly trying to improve his application/academic standing. How is it productive to punch down and tell him he probably wont be able to hack it either way lol
By provoking the idea that things have to change to go from failing dschool classes to excelling in the cbse. How is being realistic “punching down?” Or should I sugar coat it next time?

I think the true answer is none of us actually know.

But, what is probably true is the CBSE is likely your only hope of overcoming a failed class and still getting an interview invite. After that, you’ll need to have a good way to explain the situation when it is brought up. Lessons you learned, how you improved, etc.

So if you really want OMFS, give the CBSE your best shot and see how it goes.

Non cats.
Lower gpa/rank = More non cats to increase chance of getting in.

It definitely can and you don’t even need a phenomenal score.

A passing CBSE (>65?) and an intern year or two can overcome almost anything.

Slightly different take here from a PD. As above, yes, we rarely look closely at SoD transcripts unless there is something on the letter from the academic dean. Which again, we rarely look at in detail. But we all do look at how an applicant handles adversity. If you can present a good case about how you fell short and how you worked to overcome that deficiency. I am more impressed with that than a CBSE of 80+. Those applicants who do not face adversity in life have a tougher time in residency when adversity hits. And it will hit you, regardless of how smart you are or hard you work. This is how our selection committee works at my institution, we look very closely at where someone comes from, what adversity they have experienced and how they have succeeded.

As an example: In the recent past, we selected/ranked higher an applicant with slightly lower scores because this person was homeless in their teenage years and overcame that to become the first person in their family to go to college.
