So hypothetical question for y'all:

If you have a US medical student who finishes classes in early May and takes Step I in mid-June, can anyone get a 250+ with enough work? Or can everyone simply maximize their potential? Is any medical student capable of such a highly sought after score if they are willing to work for it?

yes.

Search here for the "Taus method". Its a good starting point if you aren't sure how to start your studying or how to schedule it. And it worked really well for Taus and a bunch of other SDNers. I'm hoping I'll be one of those people come June.

That's plenty of time. Definitely possible, just put in the work..you don't have to wait until classes are done to start boards studying, and yes ANY student willing to put in the time can do it. I had below avg. MCAT and worked hard for USMLE and was very happy.

UCSF with a below average MCAT?

I love how no one ever answers the OPs question... from what i ve heard working hard and doing a ton of practice Qs (all of UWorld atleast) will pretty much guarantee you a score upto 230 (a decent score).. after that it comes down to the student.. 250 is very high score probably equivalant to a 38 on the MCATs.. ask yourself do you think "anyone" can get a 38 on the MCATs?? I m guessing an avg IQ premed student who works very hard for a few weeks could probably get their score upto a 31 or 32 (probably equivalent to a 230) but would take an above avg IQ student to get much higher.. even with if you had a huge amount of study time set aside.

Believe it or not, your score is determined at birth...unless you have 3-6 months to study.

If you try hard in basic sciences and get average marks, then you will probably not score a 250+. If you worked hard and scored in the top 10% then you have a good chance of scoring a 250+.

Once you get in the 240+ territory, every question makes a bigger difference in score so the people who score high are not necessarily smarter...they just make less mistakes because of extreme discipline...which is usually missing in average students.

you mentioned an interesting concept. "discipline". i'm assuming you are referring to discipline of test taking, and the discipline to focus in a 48 minute block and per question.

the reason i inquire is that i feel that i am not a good standardized test taker. I can talk my way through situations real well (wish the boards were an oral test) but i don't know (and i'm trying) how much molding of my brain i can do into thinking like the NBME.

so if you guys have test taking STRATEGIES - or if there is a thread with such suggestions/experiences - i think it would be really helpful. thanks!
