Hi guys,
I am a late-comer to FM but I'm pretty sure this is my path in medicine now. I am at the end of my 3rd year and am faced with making next year's schedule. My question is, if I do an away rotation at a place I wouldn't necessarily want to do residency (because of geographical location), but because I have ties there professionally and personally, will this limit me at all when I'm applying? More specifically, I am thinking of doing an away rotation in my state but would like to do residency outside of my state just to live in a different part of the country for the 1st time in my life. Will residencies outside of my state see that I did an away within my state, and think that I don't want to leave my state and therefore not grant me an interview? Did I say "state" enough times?
This is a known problem for another specialty I was considering (EM), so I am wondering if it applies here as well.
FWIW, I think I am a decent applicant with HP/HO preclinical grades, Step 1 240, all HO so far in clinicals, and interesting/unique tidbits in my CV with one possible red flag of taking a year off for research/travel/volunteer work (hence interesting tidbits, maybe).
Thanks
