I ask this because, I want to know if how many schools you apply to could affect an applicant negatively. Im considering applying to 13-14 and I don't know if dental schools will see it as a bad thing like they would see it as though an applicant doesn't really care where what school they get into and will just go to wherever they are accepted. Any help with this would be awesome. thanks!

Pretty sure they don't see, and they do not care.

<-20 Schools.

they don't see... and they don't care.

18 schools here and I I talked about it in the 2ndaries and during some interviews. Didn't effect me negatively whatsoever

In Texas they can see which ones you plan to apply to. TMDSAS makes you list all those schools you've ever applied to. It comes up in interviews sometimes as well.

Actually... YES they can see it. Both at UW and LLUSD they pulled out the list and asked me specifically why certain schools and then why them. Whether the schools care... that's totally up to the admissions committee when they review you as an applicant.

wait... what?

How? Before April-May period, AADSAS doesn't release the list of schools you've applied to... how did they know which schools you applied to?

From my understanding they basically see your entire AADSAS application the entire time. They have access in April-May to the schools that you are holding acceptances at so that they can weed those out to finish there classes for financial aid purposes

thats strange.... I've talked to a few dental school admission members about this very thing... all of them said "we don't have access to that information, only way to know is if/when you tell us"

yea I just called 2 schools and asked them how they feel about applicants who apply to 15+ schools. They were kinda confused and told me that they don't care how many we apply to. Honestly, I bet they get happier because they get money.

So I guess my 22 is ok? It just hurts my wallet so much 🙁

My understanding is that they CAN see your entire application, including where you have applied and if you have accepted. It seems that shouldn't be the cas, but it is as far as I know.

Whether or not they care is a separate question.

It's not a bad thing if you apply to many schools:

  1. shows you want to be a dentist really badly - at the end of the day, you are open to go to the school who values you as a candidate.
  2. you're not arrogant enough to think you're the best applicant and will get accepted anywhere
  3. you respect a lot of schools' values, curriculum, location, prices, etc.
  4. etc.
<-----25 schools.

12 schools isn't that bad. Isn't that around the average number of schools people apply to anyway?

yeah I think 12 is.

But I'm applying to 22... still trying to cut back back my list. I want to make sure I apply to enough schools but at the same time, I don't want to overkill it.

Schools can only see your acceptance/deposit starting 4-5-2012.

From the ADEA website

"Applicants Holding Positions at Multiple Institutions. Starting April 1, dental schools
report to ADEA AADSAS the names and identification numbers of candidates who have
paid a deposit, hold a position in a dental school entering class, or both. After April 5,
ADEA AADSAS reports to each institution the names of candidates for its entering class
who hold acceptance(s) at additional institutions. A dental school may rescind an offer of
admission to a candidate who has paid deposits to or holds positions at multiple
institutions. If the dental school chooses to withdraw this candidate from the entering
class, the dental school must give the candidate a minimum 15-day notice."
