I have below average board scores and want to go into medicine. I am doing an away rotation and met with the PD recently. He told me that he could care less about board scores and is more concerned about your motivation & dedication. He also told me that the resident I am working with has said good things about me and he rather have residents that are motivated instead of people book smart.

Anyway, my question is can someone get in because you are seen as hard-working even if your scores suck?

Yes, and over time you will realize how little academic numbers matter. Congratulations.

Uhhh, obviously - you just said the PD told you that.

yes. 100%.

but, even if you have below average board scores, about 50% of US students have them as well. board scores are not the be all end all. good lor's, good clinical grades, maybe an improvement on step 2, a strong interview...all these things can help overshadow a weak step 1.

Also remember that you can blow your chances of getting a residency by doing an away rotation too. visiting a program does not guarantee you a spot, you have to shine on that rotation. of course you can get in if you have bad scores if you fit with the program, everyone gets along with you, you are hard working on an away, and you come across as really intelligent also. If you come across as a slacker, doesn't know what they are doing/talking about, pompous, etc, you can blow your chances too.

Ditto on what ptolemy said. Some of us are in programs because we did sub-i's there as students. (I'm fairly confident that's my story.)
