I recently have been thinking more about a career in primary care, and I definitely am not interested in a competitive fellowship like Cards, GI, or Heme/Onc. I did not apply for the primary care track for one program that I am particularly interested in because when I applied I only chose categorical programs. Can I ask the program to be considered for their primary care track? Or is it too late and I should just take my chances at getting the categorical program where I can still choose a primary care career?

Sure. You can also ask them for a pony. You are more likely to get a chance at the PC track than a pony but you never know.

Also, most programs will allow some flexibility within the program if you match there so you may be able to slide over from the traditional track to the PC track once you're there.

Finally, while most PC tracks are considered less competitive than their associated general IM track, there are some where the inverse is the case (Social Med at AECOM/Monte springs to mind).

But if you wind up in a non-PC track somewhere, rest assured that you will be able to focus your training on a PC career if you so desire, especially since the new IM RRC rules (in place this July) require a lot more outpt general IM.
