I am going to major in finance, get my degree there first. Then do a post-bacc program and take the re-reqs and study/take the DAT. After all that is done and my stats are good enough, can I apply to dental school?

ofcourse. if u do good on the dats you are in no problem (as with anyone else). make your gpa good with the prereques. good luck

YES!

As long as you take a postbacc that covers all the pre-reqs (and look at the website for the schools you are interested in because some want biochem(Tufts), others psychology (UCLA, UCSF), others a full year of calc (Harvard)). So be sure to check this.

There are many non-trad students that take time off, switch majors or careers. Study, do well in science classes, and on the DAT and you will be fine.

I have majors in both finance and accounting, and am currently in the process of doing all of the requirements for pre-med/dent with hopes of attending med or dental school in 07. It is my understanding that you can apply as long as you complete the requirements of the school, have a respectable gpa (school requirements differ), and perform well enough on the DAT.

I'm not sure if it is necessary to shadow a dentist or volunteer, etc. Does anyone have anything to offer in this area? Does shadowing or volunteering strengthen one's application for dental school?

ummmmm was that a joke? everything strengthens your ap. do everythign!

it sounds like you havent even started your finance major yet. why not just start as a science major and better prepare yourself? then you wont need the post-bac. ignore this post if you are already set in the finance major.

and yes, volunteering and shadowing will help your app. it will hurt if you dont have any hours because most applicants have at least some. it shows your interest in the field.

Is it possible to get your degree in Finance and take the dental prereqs at the same time? It seems like a waste of time to get one degree and then go back for the prereqs. Why not take the dental prereqs as your electives rather than PE or art classes? I know this is what many students do at my school.

Can't you get your finance degree, AND fulfill your 8 science classes at the same time? Seems to be more time efficient.

I majored in economics and business in college. i'm going to start taking my pre-reqs this summer so that i can try to get into d-school by 2008.

if you're really interested in taking up finance as a major, i suggest that you take the pre-reqs as your non-program electives. you may even want to minor in bio or chem.

if your stats are good and you do pre-reqs, i think you have an excellent change of getting into d-school. many adcoms like students who majored in other fields other than science. it shows that you are flexible and have a broad educational background. also, it shows that you are passionate about other fields of study other than just dentistry. it makes you look like a jack of all trades. 😎
