Hi,

I graduated college in May 2009
I have not yet taken the DATs nor applied for Dental school yet.
Is it too late to apply for Fall 2010?
I definitely dont want to take TWO years off before dental school.
Any ideas?
Thanks

To start Fall 2010, you'd need to be applying now. It's definitely still possible if your grades are decent and your scores on the DAT are great, I know Pitt hasn't even started looking at Apps yet. I applied in November and got in, but I was at a distinct disadvantage from everyone else, and I think I only was able to get my foot in the door because of my high DAT's.

though schools say their application deadlines are around january, it's probably a little late for this cycle. if you REALLY want to still give it a shot, you may need to score 20+ on your DAT just to get noticed by adcoms - that's just the way that rolling admissions go. at this point in the game, you need to be a VERY strong applicant. do you have a good GPA?

WOW. NO kidding. you got a friggin 30 on your RC. Nice Job!!!! (though you prolly took the DAT like a year ago, you have my belated congratulations 😀)

coolchix321, certain schools weigh certain portions of the DAT more heavily than others. Vicviper got in not only did he do amazingly on his DAT in generally, but many schools emphasize the RC portion of the DAT over other sections (recent ADA / 3rd party studies indicate that RC is the best indicator of success in dental school.) so smoke that section and your Total Science and you'll be set.

where do you think you want to apply?

Hehe, thanks, I was pretty stunned myself. 🙂

And to the OP, definetly apply to Pitt and USC, they regularly have interviews for actual seats well into Spring.

If you really want to go to a school in new york, NYU is probably your best bet at this point since you're closest to their averages (sGPA 3.39/ total GPA 3.44). Not to say that you can't get into the other 3 schools, because anything is possible, but just letting you know your odds. Unfortunately, you were going to have to smoke the DAT even if you applied earlier this year, so now that you're applying later you definitely have to be on top of that. Right now, study for your DAT like your life depends on it, and then see gauge where you should apply so that you don't waste your money. Depending on whether or not you do well, you may want to consider deferring your application to next year, even if you really don't want to. Search on this forum for study materials.

BTW, just because you took the MCAT doesn't mean you're going to do well on the DAT. I have a lot of friends who assume they can fly through the DAT just because MCAT must be "harder", but it's a completely different ball game.

I dunno about u.. but it took me 2 months to study + take the DAT + get all my committee and rec letters together + write my personal statement + send in all the secondaries.. by the time u're done with that.. will prob be November :\.

I think it's better to do really well on the DAT and to write a great personal statement than to rush through them. And have you done any dental shadowing yet? Most people have been planning to be a dentist for a long time before they apply - it sounds like you made the decision within the past 2 months. One extra year isn't gonna kill you.

yes i have some shadowing experience
how many hours do they want?
one extra year will kill me

worst case, you do a post bacc with a 4.0 GPA, study for your DAT for an extra few month and smoke it, gain a ton of shadowing experience, and get into your top school.

you know, according to the ADA, the average age of D1 students is 26 years. so don't stress it 🙂
